Roto Grip Asylum Review-

Astonishing!! Asylum is one of the best balls that I’ve ever thrown. Anyone who loved the Disturbed will surely enjoy this ball. I drilled the Asylum with a 5″ pin up x 4 3/4″ Cg to Pap. The Asylum uses the middle roll 70 core wrapped around the 63MH Coverstock and finished with 3000 abrasion surface. This combination gives the ball length through the fronts but still reads the mid-back part of the lane as if it were a solid with a strong, controlled motion.

Roto Grip Asylum is perfect compliments to its predecessors: Disturbed & Deranged. When you feel the Disturbed is hooking to early and rolling out; you can ball down to the Asylum and let the ball do work. If you are throwing the Deranged and feel like the ball is pushing to much past the breakpoint or just overall not hooking enough, but the Disturbed is to much ball to suit your need then you can throw the Asylum to fit right in that gap. This ball rolls very well with surface adjustments as well. Being polished, it gets more push in the front and longer length before starting its transition left.rg_core_MiddleRoll70_4x4_fnl__06421.1384041953.1280.1280

The Asylum will work very well on medium-oily lane conditions and with med-heavy volumed patterns. The shape of the ball motion is very similar to the Disturbed, but it retains more energy down-lane and gets through the front part of the lanes a lot easier. Whether you are a cranker or a stroker, the Asylum will work well for all styles of bowlers.

The color combo of the Asylum is different and one of a kind. Utilizing the green from the Disturbed and a new bloody red color definitely makes it stand out and you will know what ball it is when it rolls down the lane. Based on the lively colors of the ball with the sick Asylum logo; I will grade the Cosmetics of this ball an “A-.” For performance, this ball definitely deserves an “A.”

How much of a step down from the Hyper Cell is the Asylum?

With my Hyper Cell at 4000, its about a 5 board difference on medium oil...What Ive liked about the Asylum is that I have used it all 3 games every week since I had it drilled. Its clean in the front, reads the mids great and has that very heavy Disturbed roll. Goes through the pins as good if not better than anything I have ever owned. It doesn't over react off the dry, I can get it out to the dry a bit early and it doesn't get crazy, but it also holds if I miss inside in the oil and comes off the pattern hard. I'm really pleased with it, best ball Ive thrown since the Nomad Solid which is my all time favorite. The Lights Out I own is also great. Two best new balls Ive drilled in a long time.

Thanks for all the info! It sounds like an awesome go to ball. Im on the verge of picking one up but cant decide between this and the new Brunswick mastermind genius.

Two different balls, The Mastermind genius is asymetrical an would probably be closer to the Defiant Soul with same drill and surface. Its going to need more oil I would think.
The Asylum is symetrical and will be a bit weaker but with a smoother earlier motion from what Ive seen of the Genius.

Gotcha. Im just looking for something more aggressive than my freakin frantic. I moved and bowl on medium heavy oil now and I just cant get it to move like I want. My speed is 16-16.75 usually and im in between stroker and tweener. Do you think the Asylum would be a better choice than the new Mastermind? Perhaps the mastermind would be too much? Im just not sure

To be honest the Mastermind Genius looks like a real nice ball, but If all you have is a Freakin Frantic I would think the Genius would be a huge jump up....Its looks very strong, like I said similar to the Defiant Soul. The Asylum should be a nice step up, it has some surface and an earlier heavier roll than the Freakin Frantic which is a weaker core and polished pearl. I would think, of course Ive never seen you bowl, just on equipment alone the Asylum would be a step up without moving you out of your comfort zone.

Thats exactly the info I was looking for. I just wasn't sure if the Asylum would be much of a step up or almost not worth it kinda thing. Just didnt want to regret it and think I should of went more aggressive to the genius or even the soul like you mentioned. Ill ask my pro shop and see what they think but it seems like the Asylum would be a nice addition. Thanks

My Asylum will be ready on Monday.  The drilling my proshop operator decided on was 60 x 4 3/4 x 40.

I have an Asylum with a pin even drill, and let me tell you this ball is strong. I left the cover at the oob finish, and it moves. So I am going to put some polish on it so it will go longer. I do believe this would be what you are looking for, not the Mastermind.

Thanks for the help guys. The more I search the new I'm leaning towards the Asylum. I don't think I'm quite aggressive enough for the genius. I just cant get my freakin frantic to move much at all especially on the backend. I haven't messed with the cover yet but im in an upgrading mode so I figured whatevs haha. Just need something that will show me some better movement.
