12O'Clock Drilling---Sonic X???
« on: October 22, 2003, 02:01:53 AM »
Got a Sonic X Pearl today used. Pin above bridge with CG mid grip in middle directly below pin. Will this layout give me enough pop on the back end when playing deeper 4th arrow? Or should I plug the whole thing and start over? If I start over what layout do you suggest?

Using this ball as my drier lane ball as lane condition is broken down playing edge of dirt. Also on flatter conditions deeper away from OB.

Profile shows my game.

Thanks,
Scott

You don't list your PAP, so pin over fingers doesn't tell us quite enough.  With your lower track, I'd be inclined to say the drilling would be a little weak unless you have a pretty high rev rate.  If the span is close enough, change out the inserts or tape it up and throw it some first.

I had both Sonic Xs and to be honest you'll need some mega hand to play deeper than the fourth arrow.  Both balls are very even, smooth, and controllable throughout the entire lane.  The ball will react with a smooth arc and will never be jumpy.

Unless you're bowling on gravel I do believe a stronger layout would be in your best interests.

Then again if you're playing a tight line to the pocket and not a giant swing that layout MAY be ok.

PAP is 4 7/8 over and 1/2 up.

I've got a short pin on mine and a basic stack in the middle of the grip...even with a longer pin and placing the pin over the bridge, I still don't see 4th arrow as real viable except maybe on absolute toast (and surface prep to keep the ball from burning up too early).

I'm not sure that redrilling is going to help enough with getting deep with the Sonic X to justify the effort...

I have the ball that A_P_K used to have.  I have quite a bit of hand.  I don't think that I played third arrow with it last night.  I just don't see enough comeback to have moved any deeper.  I don't think a redrill would help mine either.  Just my opinion.

I have one drilled 6"x 60 degree's pin high "pin is above the middle finger".3.5 pin to cg distance 3 oz top.The ball has excelent length with a smooth transition from skid to roll on dry lanes.Hooks about 4-6 boards more than my blue dot drilled over lable.I usauly play between 4-5 arrow out to the box with it on the lighter to dry oil patterns. It hooks about 10-12 boards less than my carbide bomb solid on oil.
If you are looking for something to turn hard on the backend look else where. This ball is more of a controle type ball that should be used on lighter oil patterns, not a open the lane up type ball unless you have MONSTER REVS like me.

I tend to play a tighter line when I am deeper...stay away from OB.

I am going to try the ball as it is now.  Because I do have a lower track my balls tend to jump on the dry unless I make a concerted effort to weaken my release.  Playing deeper I tend not to want to do that as it lowers my carry.  That's just me.

Thanks for everybobies input and will post for ya'll to read later.
