SHATTER - how is this ball working for you?
« on: October 12, 2012, 09:00:23 AM »
For those that have a Shatter, how is it working for you? What cover adjustments, if any have you made? I haven't been using mine as much, I thinking about making a a cover adjustment so I can smooth out the backend reaction just a bit. Ball does hit hard, I just don't use this ball as much as my others.

I have not used one myself.  But a guy we bowled against this past week was using one and was pretty impressed actually.  Ball did seem very flippy on the backend.  I think maybe taking this ball to 4000 abralon with no polish would make this ball useful for a longer period of time on a variety of conditions.  Ball was very clean through the front and a pronounced move on the backend.  Even at 4000, the ball should still clear the heads pretty easily but having no polish should take some of the flippiness out of it.  If still not smooth enough, then go 3000.

I've thrown mine quite a bit. More than I thought I would actually. This and a Marvel Pearl have been my league workhorses this year and the games probably split even between them. Only have thrown one tournament this year but had an OK look in games 7-8 on Kegel's Winding Road with it. I wasn't very sharp that tournament so having an OK look for the last 2 games was an accomplishment for me. I'm curious to try it on a few more sport shots. I have a feeling it could work good for me on them.

Kept the Shatter in OOB condition which suprised me. Most Roto/Storm pearls I usually have to adjust the cover on. Mine's drilled pin over ring 45x4x30 with an x-hole 2" past my PAP, not 2" down on the VAL. I think this makes the backend much more controllable. It's a strong drilling but the Shatter seems to clear the front 35-40' effortlessly, even if the volume isn't there. I had the same drill on a Track Heat and Storm Spit Fire and both were very versatile for me and an added bonus was both seemed to work on broken down sport shots.

My stats are 275-300rpm, 17mph(pins), medium tilt lower axis rotation. PAP 4.5" over and 0.5" up. So I'm probably slightly speed dominant.

The Shatter!!! I love it!! I love it!!!! I really love it!!!!!  Can you tell that I really like this ball? This ball is a super great value and it rolls really nice especially in the back part of the lane.  I have used this ball on different conditions.  From the Shark to the Chettah PBA patterns. Thinking of getting another one!!

This ball is simply amazining!!!!! Maybe my favorite Roto ball ever! This ball is right behind the Cell and much cheaper!

As for me, I haven't been able to use mine as much. It seems to go a bit too long before it makes its move, it has been somewhat inconsistent.  So I have decided to make a cover adjustment and see if this helps.

Id start by just touching the cover slightly with a 4000 pad to just break the polish a bit before you make any big adjustments. That always helps me, I usually find that factory polished balls are too squirty for me, so I break the polish slightly by hand. Usually when I have a ball redone with polish at the pro shop, I dont see the same squirty problems.....Just my two cents....

My wife has a shatter.  She loves it.  It is just about the only ball she is using right now.  She is a stroker down the outside.  OOB finish.  13.5 14 mph.  probably 200 revs.
14lb 15.5 mph at pins 325 Revs. Silver Coach, Ball Driller. In Bag:  Storm Pro-Motion, Hyroad X, Matchup, Code Red.

Regarding new balls, I have the same problem but primarily with polished pearls.

Not solids!

I have adjusted the cover -- 4k then 2k - no polish -- we will see if this helps. I can add polish if needed.

I had a major issue with my Jet Black Taboo(polished solid) being real squirty at OB finish. I actually threw it at 4000 for a while and loved it. But when I bought the Deep Purple, I went back and had polish done at the pro shop and a surface change underneath and did not experience the same problem I had with the factory polish. Now its a great 1-2 punch
The only factory polished ball I have ever had that didnt give me that issue was a Nomad Solid. But I just matched up to that ball perfect, I had them OB(1500 polished) and at 4000 and 2000 and the ball just rolled great at every surface.

Update on cover adjustment -- after making the 4k then 2k adjustment I am now  getting the reaction I really like. It still has good length but it doesn't over react on the back end like it was doing, it has a strong but now controlable move to the pocket, nice and smooth. I am sure I will see some big scores with it now. great ball!
