This ball is as weak as it gets.  My stats are in the profile if you'd like to use as a comparison/contrast to your friend.

I have both Sonic X's and what I can tell you is they are very archy and pretty much gently roll into the pocket.  These two balls are perfect for dry lanes.  They will hook overall, but nothing near what the other two can or already do.

I have my Solid version drilled 4x4 and the Pearl version drilled 5x4.  The 5x4 gets a bit more length and is a touch more snappy on the backends.  (Not berserk or flippy, just a touch)  The 4x4 archs into the pocket very smooth and subtle.

Both balls hit like a ton of bricks, and you can easily stay in the track area all day with these two.

I don't think it is neccessary to drill these with any control layout because the hi RG and low dif already offer smooth transitions down the lanes.  You may even want to drill the ball stronger depending on how dry the lanes are.

I hope this helped in any way what so ever.

I'll have to agree with A_P_K here on the SonicX's. I have the pleasure of having the Pearl SonicX in my arsenal, and after discussing the drillings with Roger, after having Dan Smith see me bowl, we went with a stacked leverage drill. The ball naturally gets through the front, then makes a strong arc to the pocket.
However, beware, if the lanes are toast, it is still too much! This is where I am going to add a solid and drill it a bit tamer.
With the weight block (comparable to a Remedy PHD) these balls are by no means weak.

That is also why I got the Solid version......my Pearl version is too strong for scorched second shift track area,......but that's when I pull out the Solid version......even though it's a 4x4 stacked it just arcs down the lane without jumpiness or unpredictability.....it is very even and controllable.

Thanks alot guys this is what I was needing to eliminate doubt.

Ok it looks like I will go with the 4x4.I think it will be perfect because he too like to play the track area.

How about the cover on this ball does it take changes well.

Both covers are 1500 grit, one being polished and the other pearl.

So far I've only lightly polished the pearl version to keep the track area from getting torn up.  (Little too much buffing done after redrilling by my operator)  It takes the polish quickly, easily and comes off the same as well.  I have also heard of users who buffed off the factory polish from the Solid.

I believe if you took the factory polish off the solid, you could use this ball on a medium, maybe even medium heavy WET/DRY house shot as long as you had screaming backends.........

I also have the pearl Sonic X. I drilled mine with a strong layout 33/8 X 33/8. With the box finish the ball would skate on me. Once I remove the gloss with a green pad, I got the consistent reaction I was looking for. I'll play up the boards in the drier track area. Not a open up type ball. I've had great success with this ball. As you can see that A P K, MTFD, & Jeffrevs and myself like this ball with a strong layouts. These guys must be very smart, except for me I'm just lucky.
