Retro Blue---How aggressive?
« on: September 22, 2003, 08:40:12 PM »
Hey everyone,

Just curious to know how aggressive the Retro Blue Roto actually is. I've heard that it offers a huge backend move, but how much oil is it meant for overall? I'd like to be able to use it from in deep on drier conditions. Any thoughts would be helpful.

The Retro Blue is super aggressive. It probably has the biggest backend of any ball I own. We have nicknamed it J.Lo because of the huge backend it has. You can use it to play deep when lanes dry up but it still needs some head oil. Due to the coverstock being pearl if there is any carrydown it is very touchy. This ball does not like carrydown. Overall it is a great ball but its best use in my opinion is to use it on a fresh shot med-med. heavy with clean backends playing deep.

I used it to play way DEEP tonight.  Played 2nd arrow out to 5/6 board.  I'm not used to playing so deep and I wasn't sure if it would make it back from this huge swing but it certainly did.  Trust it, it will come back.

Hey Gene,
Even a fluffmeister like me can get this ball to whip left !! Nice length, readable midlane, you can see it start to rev up, then ....LOOK OUT !

I was lucky enough to find a NIB 15# with great specs a couple of months ago, but I do not know what type of drilling to put on it.  I want a strong midlane with a booming backend.  Will a label leverage fit the bill or would I have to go stacked?

Label leverage won't necessarily give you midlane on a ball with a 2.57 rg,...I'd either go stacked or kick the CG right just a touch,...say 5x4.

Personally, mine is 4 1/2 x 3

Thanks for the input guys, but I'm still curious about how much oil it will actually handle. I want this ball to be my dry lane ball, as I already have a couple of balls that are great for any type of mediums with clean backends. If the Retro would be just another ball for that, then I will probably sell it. Let me know. Thanks again for all of the help so far.

This is definitely one of my favorite Roto Grip balls as it as one of the biggest backends of any of our equipment.  The Blue Retro was marketed as a Medium - lighter oil ball.  I throw about medium ball speed with a higher rev rate and found this ball to work really well on those shorter patterns with less oil volume.  Do I think this is a dry lane ball?  By no means is it a dry lane ball, but as we all know it around here my dry lanes and your dry lanes could mean something totally different.  The best way to understand what type of "actual" lane conditions you are bowling on is for you to tell me what balls you use right now for the pattern you are describing, what they do and what you want this blue retro to do.  Along with your ball speed and rev rate.  The more information you give us the better we can understand what you truly need.

Let me know.

Thanks,

Mustang Guy,

Thanks for the input. You make a good point.  Here are my specs:

A Game--Stroker, slightly above average revs, speed around 16-17mph, high track.

The shot that I am normall facing is medium with clean backends. I use my Cherry Bomb most of the time, and I switch to my Blade Pearl when I need the ball to get down the lane a bit further.

B Game--Higher revs, more axis rotation, slightly slower speed. This is the shot I go to when I'm struggling with carrydown.

Basically, I'm looking for a ball that I can use when the Cherry Bomb and Pearl Blade are both hooking too much, too early.
