Found comfort in the Cell Pearl
« on: December 14, 2009, 11:05:29 PM »
After fighting with my Cell Pearl for 3 weeks I finally found my comfort zone with this ball.  I originally bought a Rogue Cell then added my Cell Pearl.  I had been struggling with my Pearl but 2 weeks ago I told myself I would figure this ball out.  The Pearl and my plastic spare ball were the only balls I took to the lanes with me for league (2 nights a week).  First night out I didn't do so well but still shot my average (645) and found some things that worked well for me the last game.  The last 4 league nights the Cell Pearl has been a wrecking ball, drilled 80 x 4.5 x 45 with a 4000 abralon surface (pin ended up under my ring finger, mb just under my thumb), it actually is more "rolly" then I thought it would be and that I think is what was throwing me off to begin with.  The last 4 nights I have gone 730, 762, 758, and 795. I have been standing 28, hitting 11 at the arrows, breaking around 5 or 6 and coming back to shred the pocket.

This ball is so impressive it's almost scarry, so impressive I ordered another one yesterday.  I am thinking about a longer pin, maybe 5-1/2" and putting the MB closer to my VAL.  What do you guys think?  I would like to get more length and a more angular backend.  Specs: 16.5mph, 320 rev rate, 5-5/8 over 1" up, Righty.  I bowl on all synthetics with a THS oiled 40' stripping daily, but I do have a couple tourney's coming up that are Guardian heads the first 15' then wood the rest, modified house shot at 40'.

Thanks for any help.

I have had quite a bit of experience with the Cells. an absolutely incredible line of balls, for anything medium and up! I don't think you're thinking correctly on the layout of your next Pearl. Especially with your profile, the longest, most angular and backend would be a 6 x 5 layout, with a 2 3/4" pin buffer. This will come out somewhere around 70* x 6 x 35* or so. I would get a ball with the cg slightly out of line to the right, so you will maintain sideweight. This will give you the possible option of an x hole to tune the reaction, if needed. If you put the mb close to your val, you will get earlier midlane and lose backend!!! Don't worry about 6" being too weak, these balls still flare significantly at 6", especially with 320 rpm. The pin will end up somewhere over your ring finger or bridge area and the mb will be near the thumb. These are the longest, most angular drillings I have done on Cells, and I have drilled many for myself and others. A great layout for when you have to move deep and need that little extra push and pop at the end to get the corners out. Should work exceptionally well on that Guardian!

Thanks Pooh.  The info is much appreciated, definately helps when you have someone with personal experience leading you in the right direction . Will I see a difference in flare between the 4.5" and 6" pin?  I guess to me it seems these drillings are pretty close except for the pin length but I don't have alot of experience with the new asymmetric cores.  Would I be better off polishing the Pearl I have and drilling #2 aggressive (4x4 maybe)?  My Rogue is drilled 45 x 4 x 30 w/ 2000 abralon surface and I cannot get it to wrinkle on a fresh shot, I am better off using it on a medium condition.

I am only asking and I'm glad I have someone to ask who has played with the Cell line.  Thanks again for the help, it is greatly appreciated!!

sounds like the pooh handled your answers..so i get to have fun i recently got one and like you was not *feeling* the ball but i used it in practice 2-3 weeks.then all of a sudden it started to work for me,on a 38'ths last night in a no tap i rolled first 8 natural then a 7pin leave then struck out the rest.i just could'nt miss 2ndgame i spoofed out 2 splits 208.3rd got my crap back together 9 natural for a 278   786 series for the night.for my  199 average it was a heck of a night no tap for me cashed in 2nd place for the night against some high rollers. the ball made me look like a stud.

cant wait for thursday league and roll it again  good luck on your 2nd one.

Hey gparks.  Pooh and I talked a bit between pm's and I ended up sending my Pearl back and getting a Mutant.  I'm pretty stoked about it so we'll see how it turns out.

Nice shooting with the Pearl.
