Title: Strange that discontinue balls win the Master over the Gem ball

Looks like Storm needs to remake the Idol and Uproar bowling balls instead of  the Gem

I’m not in the business of second guessing all time greats. Norm was able to jam that Gem in the track all week. It just ran out of gas on the show today.

Pretty much illustrates it is the bowler, not the ball.  The USBC is approving 300 new balls per year, which is just ridiculous.

Thing you have to understand is that the USBC Masters is a USBC event, not a PBA event.  So bowlers probably arent quite as limited as to what they can use.  HOWEVER, when the USBC bans half the current lineup after the even already started; then what else are they supposed to use?  Tour players do not get paid to push low end equipment either.  So even though balls like the Hypeds and Burners were still available, the tour players are not punching those up.  Every once in a while we would see a Hustle PBR show up.  But that ball was much stronger than advertised at that price point.  Fact of the matter is that what we saw today was a byproduct of USBCs awful decision to ban almost the entire high end lineup after the event had already started.

Why is it ridiculous?

There is no real innovation in bowling balls.  300 new balls per year just shows the manufacturers are flooding the market with recycled products being sold under a different name and color.  It is unnecessary.

Ok so that means your against the open market? Why is it unnecessary are any of the costs coming out of your wallet? And I take it your a chemist that you are so aware of no improvements or upgrades to the current product line. I know everyone on here thinks they are a genius but you by far are the above all others

Not sure why you are so triggered over someone expressing an opinion.  The USBC puts limits on the dynamic aspects of bowling equipment including the oil absorption limits of bowling balls.  The manufacturers work really hard to convince you that they are making ground breaking advancements in technology.  That is all marketing, but apparently you are too easily influenced by their marketing departments.  You are the type of gullible customer they love.

Wow, remmah!

That was a pretty nasty remark! I too know that there's nothing really new under the sun when it comes to bowling balls hitting the market. I agree with Bowler19525.

Bowling on TV and bowling during match-play, while trying to make the cut are two completely different animals. Because of the hot lights needed for the cameras and all the extended commercial breaks taken.....lane conditions can change in the blink of an eye. So the fact that Norm didn't win with the Gem does not surprise me. He needed a ball with some built in forgiveness.

Simo recognized that fact by actually throwing two different balls. One on each lane. Has nothing to do with how great or how bad the balls are. It has everything to do with the bowler and his awareness of conditions and how they transition.

We cannot blame the ball choice for the reason he lost.  We all know under the lights the oil transitions differently and faster than during qualifying and match play.  Norm actually had a really good look after he adjusted from the shot in the first frame.  My thought is that Anthony being inside him pushed oil into Norm's breakpoint area which caused the bad reaction down lane in the latter frames.  Then, Norm just threw one bad shot in the 9th that went through the nose.  Had he thrown a good shot there; he is looking at 240s which would have locked Simonsen out.  That pattern they laid down forced premium shot making.  There was not going to be a ball that was going to be forgiving. If you watch closely to that show, everyone threw smooth/continuous reacting equipment (IQ Tour, Idol, Gem, Jackal Ghost) except for Maldonado (Widow Ghost) and his look was terrible as a result. Anthony got lucky as he had to make a big split in the 8th to get passed Brad Miller.  He misses that split he loses and Brad is bowling Norm for the title.  I think Norm beats Brad because Brad struggled with his reaction and only shot 185 against Simonsen.

New colors, core names, and marketing, but the product hasn't changed.

Transitions are tough on any flat pattern but are often the trickiest on medium length 40 ft+/-. It looked like the pattern started to settle down after the first game.  Later it e as harder and straighter as the best options.  Smooth rolly equipment from any vintage is preferable to any latest greatest ball

37-40 ft transitions are very tough because you’re usually jumping zones moving into flatter areas the further you migrate in. It’s extremely difficult.

Yet if you were out on the PBA right now, you'd be the epitome of the premise of this very thread. Congratulations for outing yourself.

Now, for the record, I wouldn't have a problem with using balls that are discontinued to win over new balls that are out there. for a good two years, Tommy Jones used the Gamebreaker over the Playmaker, The entire Mission series, the Signals, Pursuit and Pursuit-S, until the Challenge, Champion, and Pivot came out. The Gamebreaker came out in 2007, while the Pivot was 2013.

Besides, with this being a USBC tournament, I reference my post about using 30 year old gear in this tournament, because USBC rules apply, not the PBA.

Never threw an idol..... Don't match up historically with the hp3 stuff ...idk why

But the UPROAR is totally one of the best low end pearls I've ever used

Just curious, where did he find an Uproar?  Does Simo have access to a cache of retired Utah balls to drill, or did he have to procure on his own?  Belmo was throwing a Purple Hyroad (Hyroad Nano?) a few weeks back too.

Can’t imagine those two balls were just sitting in the PBA truck.

I'd say he got them on his own, and because of that, that's what makes the Masters and the US open such unique tournaments, especially for the fact that they are USBC tournaments. Because of that, they aren't limited to what balls the PBA limits you to use. And given his history, I could see him going on the hunt for collecting unique or older, discontinued balls. I mean, if I could find another one, I'd punch up the NIB TPC Warrior I have, or plug/redrill the Forest Fire Storm I was given in the mid 1990s. If it works, and it's USBC approved, if they have it, they can use it.

Someone correct me here as I know I'm wrong with this, but was it the Masters or was it the WSOB about 8-10 years ago when the title match was contested by two bowlers from South Korea? If so, I want to say that both of the balls they used were overseas releases and weren't grandfathered into the list of PBA-approved balls.

Next season when she gets it (seeing her performance this year, she will), I'd love to see someone like Urara Himeji get the personal invite directly into the Women's US Open and watch her throw some of the ABS gear she has, along with the rest of the major brand balls in her bag.

Again, it being a USBC tournament makes all the difference.

His own stash of retired balls. He lives in Las Vegas.

Daren Tang is also in Vegas and has a stash of retired balls too. A lot of guys do, pretty sure Wes still has some gold IQ Tour Pearls.

I bowl with two touring PWBA players with SPI. Their reserves of undrilled balls is off the charts. I imagine touring mens players have access to almost anything ever produced.

Interesting, thanks. Being local had an advantage in this case.  Could, for example, the Uproar be used in a PBA event?

Of course. The only limit is the approved list and urethane can't be older than 2 years
