Title: Thinking about going Roto. Need some help.
Post by: yo on July 09, 2009, 05:06:07 AM
so i recently have been going through some changes. i dropped weight to a 14 and bought a rouge cell and received an emerald vibe as well. after having the original cell solid, and now this rouge cell, i think im starting to like the reaction i get from roto grip equipment. i also have a virtual gravity drilled close to stacked with A LOT of polish on it. the rouge is drilled pin under the bridge with the mb, or rg, kick out to the right about 45*. i want to make an arsenal using roto and some storm. i was looking at some of the new stuff like the nomads as well and just cant think of what to get or use. i want to keep the rouge and the virtual in my arsenal as well. maybe a 4 ball arsenal would be nice.

***by the way, my rouge hooks a lot more than my virtual for some odd reason. could be the drilling or the coverstock prep but man does that rouge hook. thanks for the help.

If you can find one, get a Neptune for lighter conditions.  I absolutely love mine!

I have a NIB Neptune I haven't drilled yet. How is your's drilled and what type of reaction do you get? Thank you.

how are those new nomads supposed to fit in with the rest of the roto stuff? i was thinking

rouge, virtual(a lot of polish), cell pearl or nomad pearl, mars or neptune

that sound good? was going to drill the cell pearl similar to the "tommy jones" layout with the mb above the thumb and the pin way up.

i have a rogue and also like it.

while i cant always find the perfect line for the rogue what it does offer me is a look on not just heavy oil but it also allows me to get deep as the lanes turn towards medium and it still carries. my rogue is drilled with a weak MB.... i could just imagine what it must do with a really strong drill on it!

I drilled mine pin up, but fairly strong (4x4) because I don't have a lot of hand.  Sails through medium and light oil, reacts predictably once it hits the dry.  Wouldn't call it a skid/snap...more of a hard turn.  A little sketchy on carry down, but that's to be expected.

the rouge is a beast.. hahaha. drilled really strong makes it so aggressive. best ball ive thrown in a long time. never had something turn the corner so hard, and still continue.

so after talking it over with my proshop guy, he recommended going with these 5 for Roto//Storm.

Rouge
Virtual Gravity (polished)
Nomad Pearl
Storm Natural
Spare Ball

That sound like i can cover just about everything? for long distance tournaments where i only take my 3 ball tote on the plane, i was thinking i could just take

Rouge
Nomad Pearl
Natural

please let me know what you think. i have a couple tournaments on the way and dont have anything i can use besides the rouge and emerald vibe which makes it a big gap. thank you!

For me its CELL, ROGUE, CELL PEARL, GRAND ILLUSION, BLUEDOT SPAREBALL. BUT WORST COMES TO WORST CELL, ROGUE, GRAND ILLUSION, BLUEDOT SPAREBALL. CELL PEARL SOMETIMES I GET CONFUSED ON HOW THAT BALL IS REACTING CAUSE OF THE WAY I HAD IT DRILL. STRONG ALMOST LIKE EARLY ROLL.

That sounds like a decent bag, i would still say you need a Mars or Neptune in there then use the natural as the spare ball, there dosnt look to be much difference from the nomads to the illusions so eather one of those would be great

thanks ctl. really made me rethink this about the neptune. i still want one but if i do, where would i put it in my arsenal? and if i had to pick 3 balls to bring only, which would you pick? i want to make it a 5 ball arsenal that i can bring around to local tournaments and a 3 ball arsenal that i can bring on the plane in my 3 ball tote. 50lbs limit sucks..

idk about a 3 ball bag, i can kill my wrist if needed for spares so a 3 ball roto back would be:

Rogue Cell
Grand Illusion
Neptune

but a 5 ball bag would consist of:

Rogue
Cell Pearl
Grand Illusion
Neptune
any spare ball (maybe Storm Natural but that golden globe looks SWEET)

my usual bag has the rogue, grand illusion and my Neptune and i believe they would make a fairly good balanced tournament bag

the rogue is defiantly for the heavy stuff but it can also play a inside line a little better than a cell solid, the grand illusion is very underrated and could be a great benchmark ball, the Neptune is a little stronger than what people give it credit for but with a weak layout and the ability to kill the wrist on spares, it would be great dry and spare ball, instead of the Grand Illusion, you might be able to sub in the new Nomads, they look like there a little stronger than the illusion line and can swing a little better as well

all of roto grip's stuff takes surface change REALLY REALLY well so you can tweak them as you see fit but this is what i would go with if

After thinking a bit, if you were going to try a 3 ball bag, i would rather try out the Mars cause like the Rogue Cell, its a hybrid cover stock so it can polish to give you that pearl look (Neptune) or dull up to give you a smoother more solid look (Pluto), with only taking 3 balls, you might find it matching up well at a different surface, same goes with the Rogue Cell...

yeah i usually break my wrist for spares when i dont have my spare ball but it just makes it easier when i have mine. i was thinking about going with a natural because at least i can throw it more like my regular stuff at my spares and more dirrect. i must admit though... that golden globe does look awfully nice! hahahaha! but right now im using a widow clear spare ball. the mars does look nice but can i get away from it with using a natural you think? usually when it drys up, i take whatever ball i have that goes the longest and just go end over end and hard. or i just take my spare ball which has been pretty useful in the past couple weeks in league.

I do the same, when my Neptune starts even over hooking, i start to go with more forward rotation, but i find that it works with something with more backend movement like the Neptune compared to something smoother, gives me a little more hit and carry to where something like the natural might not retain enough energy for the back to carry the corners, i guess it depends on the bowler and what kind of ball/layout they like throwing

if you have had luck with the urethane like the natural then go with it, i was just thinking in a 3 ball bag, you want the least amount of equipment that covers the most about of conditions that you might see, thats where i thought about the mars and how you can really change the cover stock to match up better with a pattern to where the natural could leave a bigger gap when dropping down to it

For a three ball setup would go...

Rogue
Nomad
Neptune

I like the thought of solids as get smoother reads with them. Can put a touch of polish on the Nomad and should cover a wide variety of conditions.  With the touch of polish will take the front part of the lane out til it really gets burned up.

If going with a 5 ball....

Rogue
Cell Pearl
Nomad
Mars (Nomad Pearl)
Neptune

Strong 5 ball lineup that will be able to handle anything thrown at you...

Hope this helps!

Mike
