Totally confused about the Grand Illusion
« on: July 17, 2008, 02:14:46 PM »
Everything ive heard/read about the GA is that it fits right under the cell nicely.

After looking into it & thinkiing about preordering the GA, i see that its reccomended for medium to light oil.  How is this ball supposed to fit right under a heavy oil ball, if its made for med/light oil?

Anyone with answers?

Doesn't the Grand Illusion come polished?  Why not knock the shine off of it and it should handle medium to medium-heavy just fine.  I had the Horizon Solid, which has a similar core and at 1000 Abralon, the HS would handle medium-heavy oil just fine.

According to Roto's Ball Chart....

Grand Illusion would be a step down from the Cell..

It probably has an "appearance" finish on it, meaning its really polished up from the factory. I would assume with a slight coverstock adjustment or even just trying it as it may be stronger than medium-light it would end up being the perfect step down.

I dunno, it just seems strange that the cell is DEFINITELY a heavy oil ball, although i have mine polished & use it as the first ball out on THS.  Then their "step down" from the cell is described as a ball for medium to lighter conditions.

Cell is for medium to heavy.  Grand Illusion is a little weaker and comes polished for medium to light.  That's a step down, and if you knock the polish off, an even smaller step down.  You're overthinking this.  Do NOT base your decisions off marketing.  Base it off what you know about ball reaction.

Shawn,

I am assuming you were looking at bowling.com and in its description it does say for medium to light conditions, when you look at bowlingball.com description it says it is for medium to heavy condition, buddiesproshop has it for medium oil and finally Roto Grips own ball chart has the ball listed for medium oil and a fit between the Illusion and Cell.  I would pay more attention to where Roto Grip has the ball positioned.  Watch the video of Wes Malott interview on the Roto Grip website http://www.rotogrip.com/products/balls/video/default.asp?vname=Wes_Malott_Interview.   This may help.

Looking at RG's site it has the same core, same core numbers, and a solid version of the same cover as the Illusion yes it can be confusing.

I emailed Roger questioning where it would fit since I own the original Illusion, using the same layout he suggested to scuff the shine off like some of these people already are.

That should make it fit nicely between both balls with little or no overlap.

Well it's called the "Grand Illusion" for a reason right?

My Cell IS polished, 500 + polish, anything less hooks early for me.  Im still a little confused, to me, a "step down" is 5 - 8 boards less hook at the OOB condition with the same drilling.

Maybe im asking too much.

The Odyssey and Grand Illusion have the same coverstock.  The Odyssey came at 2000 no polish and began its move early (Core) with strong move late in the mids (Cover).  Given the higher RG core in the Grand Illusion and polished cover it will get farther down the lane and have a stronger response to the dry than the Odyssey.  I can't see this cover being good for med-light with out a 1-1.5 inch pin buffer and higher grit surface and polish.  The Illusion fills that need.

Manufacturer's design balls to fit "most" (average joe/jane) bowlers with a box finish.  If you don't think or believe it will fit your needs with out adjusting the surface then look at another piece.  Most people talk about the Pluto being a great step down for medium to heavy oil.

I also use the Horizon Solid as a step down currently but will be looking at the Grand Illusion when I can bowl again next year as a replacement for the HS.

Good luck with your selection.

A Horizon Solid would be perfect there that is for sure...

You can go with the Pluto to fill this also. Don't believe the numbers on this piece as it a seriously strong ball.  Here is what BTM Reviewed it at..

Oil:
Stroker - 9
Tweener - 9
Cranker - 9.0

Med:
Stroker - 6.5
Tweener - 5.5
Cranker - 3.0

As you can see this is a much stronger ball than the numbers would indicate...

Here is some video proof....

http://www.rotogrip.com/products/balls/video/default.asp?vname=plutotweener

To me this is the perfect step down to the Cell if you can't get the Horizon Solid.....

Moose:

Although the web site says the Grand and Odyssey have the same cover, I GUARANTEE you they do not!!  It is much, much closer to the CELL cover than the Odyssey and I expressed my thoughts to Hank and Roger that I thought it was a mistake to NOT promote that in this price point - Premium cover on a reliable motion for $175 retail.  That's sick.
