More Backend
« on: May 16, 2009, 03:22:56 AM »
I have a Rogue Cell that is not living up to it's potential. The Pin is above the ring finger. MB 1" right of thumb, Pin 5-1/2 from PAP,60 degree pin angle, MB 4-1/2 from PAP, 40 degree val angle. I have a Roto Grip Rush with almost the same layout that is a beast. I can get it the Rush wide and it stills comes back. If I get the Rogue a little wide it's wash out city. My question is what can I do to the surface to make the ball come alive. I don't want to redrill it. Any input on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Carlos

Take it to 1000. It will even out the reaction (and make it less angular), but you'll get more overall movement.

Thanks Tom for your help. I really want to use it more but I'm not getting a real good reaction from it right now.

If it is still in OOB, take it to 2000 and then if that doesnt do it, then 1000

I just had it taken to 1000. I will see how it reacts the next time I bowl which will be in a day or two. Thanks

The other issue MIGHT be that it's too strong right now.  If there's a lot of friction outside on the pattern you're bowling on, missing out will result in the ball getting into too much friction too early, and it will roll up too soon and not have a chance to recover.  You may find good results in going with a polished finish instead, perhaps 1000 abralon or 2000 abralon as the underyling grit, then apply polish.

So if using more surface doesn't help, give polish a try and see how it reacts.  Good luck.

The RUSH I had was polished, but the ROGUE is TONS stronger/earlier for me than the RUSH ever was. Even polished.

If your RUSH is still shiny, I would suggest that the ROGUE is burning up its energy too early due to the stronger coverstock/core combo, even though it doesn't "appear" that way to the naked eye.

Energy conservation can be a tricky thing. I have seen power grooves outhook virtual gravitys on some conditions, just because the high RG cores and polished, mild coverstocks of the power grooves allowed them to store energy all the way to the breakpoint while the virtuals "flared out" while still on initial trajectory away from the bowler on a vector away from the pocket.

Any bowlers release produces a finite amount of energy. Where this energy is spent depends on the surface friction generated between the coverstock and lane, and in how the core reacts to said frictional factors in its energy burning properties. If you burn all the gas in your car before you reach your destination, it's just no good. Same way with the energy in your ball, burn it up before the breakpoint and its just no good.

The Rogue PR says that it is 4000 abralon, but I remember a recent post that told about factory surfacing and it related that the 4000 finish was over a VERY AGGRESSIVE underlying finish of a much lower grit (500 abralon I think), so that it wasn't a "true" 4000 abralon finish.

Does your Rogue have an X-hole in it? If not, you could perhaps enhance the balls reaction with the strategic placement of an adequate x-hole, but I would only do this after trying several different combinations of surface finish.

 Good luck.

I hope the 1000 will do something for me. My Rush is not polished, but when it gets down the lanes with that boomerang look its hard to beat. I'll work on the Rogue until I'm out of options. I wanted the Rogue to replace the Rush I guess It may take some time. Thanks again guys

Carlos:

Don't overlook the lane surface may be doing this too.  The difference in cover between the Rush and Rogue is infinitely different and the cover on the former may be gripping quickly causing he ball to quit BECAUSE OF THE LANE.  Need to also ensure it's being used in the correct application.

I took the Rogue to 1000 abralon and what a difference that made for me. First game of practice I usually use all the balls for a frame or two. I started with the Rogue and did not put it down. 265 for the first game. I used my Rush for the second game finished with 184. Back to the Rogue 255. Then I stayed with the Rogue for a third game of 217. Played around with two other balls for two games then got the Rogue out for the last game. Shot 256. I'm going to the TNBA on Thursday and I hope the Rogue get the carry I had today. Thanks tomgriffin for the suggestion.
