Drilling recomendations
« on: March 25, 2009, 02:54:53 AM »
I am tracking my wife's new Mars and my new Rogue delivery and anxious to get them drilled. This is my wife's first hook ball just switching from a plastic. She has thrown the Pluto for about a month now that belongs to a teammate and really loves it. We do not know her PAP or mine for that matter. What do you recommend for a drill layout? The rogue is a big step for me as I am upgrading from an old blue hammer FABALL. I need some suggestions as well. thanks for any help.

you need to find your pap to layout a ball effectively, where you place the pin either up or down, close or farther away from your pap dictates everything...the mars doesnt have a MB but the rogue does so where you place the MB will affect ball movement as well....so get your pap narrowed down first, also your ball speed, revs, and condition you will be bowling on will need to be known...i know this isnt prob what you were looking for but this info is important when choosing a layout..

Ok I guess I need to know this. My Faball, can i use it to determine my PAP, I have heard it does not have a pin and it does have a pin. I am not knowledgeable enough to figure it out myself but I know there is not a different colored plastic DOT on it anywhere. there is a Hammer symbol and the FaBall Bullseye.

IMHO, if it is your wife's first hook ball, go with a simple label layout and put the pin in a strong position, wherever it may safely end up at about 1:30 from the CG. This layout should...
a) work without having a (fixed) PAP
b) yield some serious hook even without a sophisticated release
c) yield an overall arcing ball motion which is easy to predict and handle.

The Rogue is another matter - here, you definitively need your PAP to set the ball up properly, and a ball driller who knows how to deal with strong MB balls. It is HUGE step up from a Blue Hammer, in many ways, so better have the ball driller watch your game (and have him determine your PAP at the same time). This should be the ball driller's service, anyway, if he wants to deliver a good job for you with this ball.

Thanks alot for everyone's advice. I will figure my PAP out tonight and get my ball drilled this Saturday and throw a few games. The balls should be sitting on my step this afternoon. I am so exited this is my first quality ball!!

Ok I have studied the drilling recommendations for the Rogue that Roto Grips gives and I am thinking a 5x3 layout, anyone got any thoughts? The lanes burned out quick last night and it has me thinking I may have to play some tricky lane conditions alot on league nights and I want smooth breaks and strong back ends.

Wouldn't it be best to let her learn alittle more with the Mars before drilling the Rogue????

The best thing for you to do is email ROTO Tech people.  I have asked them for recommendations on three Cell most recently the Rogue.  They send you information quickly and a drill pattern custom fit for you.  They need some information on you and the ball you want drilled.  I went to a local Pro shop who video taped me and obtained the following information on me:

Ball speed  15.73 Off hand
                             15.34 Over All
                 Rev Rate    232.50
                 Axis Tilt   5 1/2 Rt. X 1 1/2 up
                 Ball Information  15.4 lbs - 3.26 Top Wt - 2.5 3 Pin
Recommendation for me with Rogue   4X6 3 3/4 Pin Buffer

I asked them for a drill pattern for the Rogue I want to use at the USBC Tournament in Reno.  I have had a lot of success with the Cell and Cell Pearl that the Techs mad recommendations on.  Hopes this helps you
