What Roto Grip ball to get.....?
« on: January 15, 2013, 11:58:24 AM »
I want to add a Roto Grip ball to my bag and not sure which one to get.  Based on my "current favorites" and what matches up well with ME and my game, these are whats currently in my bag:  Nexus solid, DV8 Reckless, Virtual Gravity (polished), Black Widow Pearl, can anyone suggest a new Roto Grip ball for me??   I was thinking of:  Critical Theory, Defiant Edge & Soul as a few to look into.   I've not thrown Roto Grip before but have always wanted a Critical Theory but strayed to Brunswick for a minute.  Not happy or having success with the last new ball I got (Nexxxus) so looking for something new in Roto Grip.  (Oh, I am more less down and in player, lower rev rate, ball speed around 15 or more or less, dropped down to 14 recently also.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Cathey

I just drilled a Soul and it seems to be a great addition.  Plenty of push thru the fronts but a stronger move on the back where the original Defiant started too early and the Edge may have been to long.

I will also be drilling a Wrecker soon to fit under my IQ Tour and Tour Pearl, which are both great balls from the Utah brands.  For me the Soul is a little more than the IQ Tour, the Iq Tour is a ball that has saved me numerous times.  I'm thinking the Soul will also be that good.

Good luck with your new purchase......Storm/Roto Nation Forever!!!

Having different specs (rev dominant here), I wouldn't know.

But I love Rotogrip balls in the lower end of the Spectrum.
I am using nicely the Roto Sonic X for when our shot is short and sparky off the spot.  The Sonic X is roto's yesterday version of today's slightly stronger Shout, a low diff solid.

Our shot lengthens I then go to my pin down Rotogrip Rising Star(Hybrid) revs and hits very strong, the new Wrecker looks like a prettier remake in all ways!.

Finanlly as the shot goes much longer I switch to my old time Sonic Boom (pearl), pin alongside and a step wider squares me up again.  This ball is a slightly weaker version of today's Shatter!

Let me tell you these balls are not weak!  Except for the Sonic X solid they are humungous.  The Sonic X is pocket friendly but slightly carry deprived I have not compared to today's Shout Solid.

In the strong ball area I've seen many straighter bowlers love the Critical Theory.  I've also seem some slower spinners use very successfully the Defiant dull on a dryer league crown.

The Defiant Soul and the Critical Theory are both going to be fairly similar.  The Critical Theory is known for its huge backend for a sanded pearl.  The Soul is going to be clean but cover a similar amount of boards while reading a little earlier.  It would come down to your preference of either having massive backend or having more midlane control with strong backend.

Having thrown Roto Grip for a while now, I like all of their lines.  However, their entry and mid-performance lines stand out as the most impressive to me.  The Berserk is a very good benchmark as a hybrid.  It's versatile and can be used on virtually all medium and some medium-heavy patterns (if drilled strong).   The symmetrical Caliber Core is one of the best I've seen for storing energy and keeping pins low on the deck for good carry.  Just core and cover, no filler.

For the entry level balls, if you can find a Rising Star, get one.  That is one of the best I have ever thrown in that price range.  You seriously get a ton of ball for the money and it is strong enough to handle some longer medium patterns.  The Neutron Core really flips off the spot and carry  is excellent.  The thing I loved most about that ball is that when the lanes were starting to burn up, I could still easily get left, wheel it, and that ball would still finish hard.

Get the critical theory..

Lower price, should have more backend than anything you own, works well at out of box condition and when polished.  There is quite a bit still unknown about the soul, but the critical was a huge sucess.  plus i believe its being discontinued...

I also agree with the Critical Theory -- but get one soon they are discontinued. IMO the C/T is one of the best Roto balls ever made. I have 2 C/T with different layouts. one pin up so I can play more direct when the lanes dry out and the other pin down when there is more oil. The Edge is also a very good pearl as well, it is more smoother than the C/T. I would still cast my vote for the Critical, you will not be disappointed.

I appreciate everyone's input and suggestions.... I will be getting a Critical Theory.  Now would the Defiant Edge be too similar to the CT or should I look at a Berserk to add another RG to my arsenal??  I am a stroker and don't care for balls that are TOO skid/snappy that I find for me to be harder to control, prefer something more smooth... Anyone have any thoughts??

The edge will not be close to the CT at all...unless you polish your CT! Mine is polished and a bit stronger! The edge a good step down!

+1 on the comments on the Rising Star.  Awesome core and ball on medium.  Can you say rev up and recovery.

A smoother version and almost gone.  Same core the Shooting star!

To answer your question on the Edge - the reactions are different between the Edge and the C/T -- the edge is more smooth or hard arch - where the C/T has more length and then more backend movement, not a violent skid flip move - but a more aggressive move then my Edge. I use my Edge when the back ends are a little bit drier or when there is not as much carry down. If my Edge doesn't make the move at the backend I use my Critical(s). Then it will depend on how oily the heads are on which Critical I choose to use. I would choose the Edge over the Berserk. The Berserk I have seems to be more lane specific. I use my Edge allot more than my Berserk. I also would like to mention that my Criticals are very different in reaction due to my layouts, my pin up gets down the lane at least 7 - 10 feet later than my pin down, of course depending on the speed I am throwing it. so it depends how early you want it to read the lane. I hope this helps.

Thanks Metal about the Berserk.... I have a chance to pick up an Edge for a very good price and just don't want to have balls that are too similar.   I am also contemplating a Rising Star to have for more dryer, medium conditions..   I once got a Storm tropical heat hybrid that was recommended to me as a must have and I never had a need to use it.. still have it as matter of fact, should trade it for something useful to me!  I wasn't sure if the Rising Star would end up being similar to that Trop. Heat, then I wouldn't bother.   Just trying to build up a new arsenal wih few balls since I've dropped to 14# and getting rid of all my 15s, had good luck with a couple other Storm balls (VE & VG) so wanting to try RG.  I do like my one DV8 ball (Reckless) and I love my solid Nexus, hate the XXX tho...

All comments, suggestions and recommendations greatly appreciated!

I just drilled up a Wrecker and although I only used it for about a game when my Soul started to burn up a little, it appears to be a nice mid to lower (depending on the person) end ball.  I though it was gonna be pretty flippy on the back with the surface and drill I have on it, but it was pretty smooth and continuous for me on the back side of the lane.

I also liked the Rising Star, but it is discontinued however you may be able to find one at a good price point right now

I have a Critical Theory as well as I just drilled up a Defiant Soul. For me the Soul is stronger and carriers the off hits better than the Critical. Just my 2 cents worth. Love the Soul!!!!

Rising Star and Tropical Heat Hybrid move very similar but somehow a teeny bit different.

Also the Rising Star and the Wrecker should be like the same ball.

For me my Rising Star is humumgous with lots of rev, push and strong stron angular slurve off the spot!
