Which ball???
« on: May 27, 2007, 08:57:33 AM »

I have just got myself an Ebonite SR300 pretty cheap and wasn't  expecting to have this ball, I was going to get a Black Widow though, but I am now not sure on this as I feel there may be too much overlap with these balls so I'm now considering an Horizon solid as a better ball to compliment the SR300, has anyone here experience or knowledge of these balls to compare and could give me any pointers or advice on wether my assumptions are right or wrong, basically what would be the best combo; SR300/B.Widow or SR300/Horizon Solid.
Thanks for any help.

I don't have the Horizon solid, however, it seems everyone says its a very, very strong ball...which is a good thing.

if it was me I would have it like this:

1st ball = Horizon solid

2nd ball = Ebonite SR300

I have the Horizon Solid and I have thrown the SR300 at Ebonite Demo Days.  I have the Horizon Solid drilled 4-1/2" x 4", pin over bridge.  Nice midlane read and arc reaction on the backend.  The SR300 I threw was a bit more skid/snap reaction.  I think they would make a nice 1-2 combo.

By the very design and basic nature of these two balls, BW (Black Widow) and HS (Horizon Solid), their basic ball reactions for the average rev and average ball speed bowler and with average drillings are diametrically opposed.

The Black Widow is more for medium oil than for medium-heavy and goes long for a solid (due to its very fine finish: 4000 grit). The HS is more for medium-heavy oil than medium, grabs the lanes sooner and will have more of an arc, mostly due to its 800 grit finish. Both covers are medium strong solid resins.

The BW also has a mass bias core of medium low strength (apporx .015, I believe).

As such the HS will be better for carrydown and needs slightly more head oil.

If there's no carrydown, the BW will have more backend.

Both balls' coverstocks are easily modified up and down and can be polished or left dull.

Both balls have very good carry power.
