I have an old pearl and then I saw a review of the mercury by John Davis and it caught my eye.

Anyone compare these two low diff pearl balls from Roto?

Note I have a Sonic Boom and consider it(now with a reaction enhancing weighthole) to be quite a strong piece on the backend.

Note I fit John Davis description of having a more revs than speed.

Well? Roto gurus??

I threw the Mercury for a month or so in the fall season after it came out that summer. While the Sonic X was a drier lane ball, it had a rolly look to it, much like a polished Low R.G. ball yet it never overreacted to the dry. The Mercury was great on a fresh house shot for playing the friction(It's stronger than a Sonic X), but was a bit more sensitive in oil, even on transitioning drier patterns. This made the Mercury seem like it would recover from shots missed into the friction and skid forever on shots pulled into the oil line. I tried it with some surface on it for a week or so but the cover never really wanted to read in oil. If you want a more angular reaction on drier patterns and have something else you can switch to when the Mercury gets a bit over/under then I'd drill a mercury.

When we were drilling them up in the shop, we gave alot of guys a 2" pin to PAP layout just to smoothen out the ball in drier conditions. Alot of people loved it that way because in drier patterns they still had alot of control.

I never threw the sonic boom. I have had a Mercury and 2 Sonic x pearls. The Mercury reads later than the Sonic X for me. While I had a great deal of success with my Sonics on mediums, the mercury I have needs dry heads to make the turn and hit. The Mercury is much more oil sensitive than the Sonic. If I try to use the mercury on a fresh pattern it's ten pin city, and I usually leave very few tens. On broken down lanes it's a different ball. It carries great and is very even in nature. Just my 2 cents.

for me the Boom was a tad earlier and the Merc is a bit more angular on the back both drilled the same. That being said the Boom in my experience also handled a bit more oil over all I'd say the boom was about 2 1/2 to 3 boards stronger throught the lane. I wish I still had that Boom great ball in it's element.
