First Impressions...

 of the Blackout are WOW!

First, I would again like to thank Ryan for selecting my limerick in his ball give-away contest.  I had selected the Solaris Blackout, and I'm glad I did.  My proshop was drilling it as i started my league practice last night.  I bowl first shift and was rolling my Anaconda (during practice), when he came out with the Blackout.  I only threw 2 balls with it, and put it down because practice was coming to an end, and there was not enough time to get a feel for the ball.

I started the first game with the Anaconda, playing outside like I usually do finished 223.  Then second game started out good through the sixth frame, then the Anaconda started checking up a bit early.  I pulled out the Blackout in the 8th frame and went XXXX9 for 213.

Started and stayed wih the Blackout in the 3rd game, playing the same outside line and just crushed the pocket, never a ten pin to stand.
I finished the 3rd game 258.  Now that's not quite 2 full games bowled with the Blackout, but I can tell already, this is one unique piece.

It glides effortlessly down the lane, very smooth...very predictable and just keeps coming, no big move off the end of the pattern, just a continual move.  The Blackout looks amazing going down the lane, this is one of the few balls that you know exactly what it is going to do, really quite impressive. Talk about a control ball... Now again, I have less than 2 games on it, but I know this has a spot in my bag.  Not sure if I can start the night with it, that remains to be seen.

I will update as I use it more in the next few weeks, and try to get exact specs on my layout to post a review.

Have to agree, somewhere on page two of the seismic forum, it was mention to dull the surface to make a good bench mark ball.  After throwing it last night, I'm thinking it might be too strong.

Threw a friend's BO last nite, was laying it on the 18 board out to 5-6 on the break.  Outside of that the ball was done, due to its early rolling nature.  Thing is my friend is right handed, and my right thumb wouldn't fit.  So I threw it left handed.  The ball still made a smooth arc back, despite it being drilled for the right hand.

The characteristic I like the best is the  early midlane read.  Good read during exit to dry.  Am seriously thinking of pick one up.

I agree with the effortless length and predictability, Super smooth off the spot. Hit and Carry are excellent.

I had my Blackout with me on Thrusday and was lucky I did, Our lanes were flying right from the word go, nothing held inside and the oustides were popping even harder than usual. I started with my Epicenter, I had a shakey look but I wanted to see it if it would pan out, no luck. Went to Blackout and had a nice look, playing about 20 out 7, (with a weaker drilling on the Blackout playing that line shocked me) Shot a decent second game, and the third game I lost it again totally my fault and all the issues were on the right lane (we have over the top Returns)

I love the blackout. My fav ball atm. I have one shiny with the pin in my palm and the other one stacked and dull. They both have a purpose in my bag and have very different reactions. The dull one is certainly the first ball out of my bag because it allows me to read the pattern within a few shots. The pin in palm is great playing outside or deep inside.

Must say the Blackout IS my favoite ball in my arsenal.....pin up, cg swung a little right ....4000 polished with finesse-it. Its super versitile and has great carry....love it and thinking about drilling 1 or 2 more with different layout-surface preps.

Anyone used it on high volume patterns yet?  Just curious about the range of the cover's oil handling capabilities.

the entire solaris line handles oil well. Especially the original!

I have the ff equipment for heavier oil patterns:

Apex Obsession, Infinite one, Big one, Mission, Gamebreaker, Pinslasher.  Where would you estimate the blackout to be.  I sort of felt it was around the gamebreaker-pinslasher neighborhood.

thanks in advance

When you take the shine off it reminds me a lot of the V2 Solid. I like my sanded one to be around 1000-2000 depending on the pattern.

I find that I'm better off starting with something stronger for the first game, then switch to the Blackout.  As I had mentioned in my OP, I start first game on the outside with my Anaconda, then it opens things up for the Blackout games 2 and 3.  For me, the Blackout is a killer ball on the outside, down and in.  Tonight 226-245-225 (last game missed 2 ten pins). The greatest asset of this ball, is you know exactly what it's going to do.  I wouldn't trade it for the world.
