Title: North Texas
Post by: ibowled286 on June 06, 2008, 11:33:50 PM
I was just trying to find out if there are any bowlers from North Texas on this site.  I bowl in watauga on friday nights for the summer.  Also are there any weekly or monthly sweepers in the area?

I've been trying to find the same info about tourny's/sweepers and nothing seems to be going on down in the metroplex.

I live in Arlington and bowl at Sparetime lanes and at Forum in Grand Prairie, check out Forum for your sweeper I think they run it every sat, night @ 7:30. It is a colored pin with brackets and side pots also, then after that there is a crazy eight I believe. Usually there is some pretty stiff competition if you want it and the entry for just the colored pin is $20.00 if you dont. They just resurfaced the lanes a few weeks ago and they were pretty slick outside for the first game to game and a half before they broke down and they went away pretty badly,so pack accordingly if you decide to come out.

Oh I forgot that Otis Pillow Pro shop over at Hurst Bowl is also running a bowl when you can 40 frame game, I have not tried this out myself yet but I plan to do so, I think you need 4 bowlers at a time to get the lane. Here is the phone to Otis Pro Shop 817-282-2401.

Cool Otis just drilled my second BuzzBomb (dropped to 15) and a Azo pro tactics. The Buzzbomb is a 1-2" pin under ring with cg kicked out and it is an absolute beast. The Azo is pin next to ring, mb right of thumb an inch or so and it is very, very strong off the break, the man knows what he is doing.

Even though I have taken the summer off, I usually bowl in Plano and Richardson since i live in Plano. jkier01 livesin the area towards Denton as does TBrockette also. Plano Super Bowl has a Saturday sweeper at 6:30pm and regularly runs a LastManStanding and other tourneys put on by Ryan Brodeur. If you don't mind about an hour drive east out 175 to Seven Points, Texas, they run a colorama sweeper on SAturday nights at 8:00pm and regularly have alot of money shots in theform of Strike pots, super strikes, and last time I was there, they has 18 $500 tickets to be drawn and shot for at the end needing 3 strikes for 100% across 3 lanes. Not bad and they usually field a good crowd of competition. Good Luck and hope this helps.

I live more twards Denton as well, actually both Denton and Fort Worth are about an hour away.  I live in a tiny town northwest of fort worth called Bowie.  So either fort worth or denton are the closest two bowling centers.

Hi, sorry to intrude, but I was just curious about something.

Let me introduce myself. I am Aaron and I have lived in North Texas for the past 6 1/2 years. I am wanting to get back into bowling now that I have some spare income on the side to afford to. I would say I am a intermediate bowler as my average is 140 and my highs are in the 150 - 160 range sometimes.

I have taken bowling lessons as part of college PE credit about 2 - 3 years ago. So, I know the form and timing pretty good, and I can get the house balls to hook a little.

The question I want to ask is, which pro shop would y'all recommend going to in the North Texas area? I live closest to Denton and was thinking of going over to J&Ds in the brunswick in Denton this coming week. However, I have no objections to go over near Plano to the super bowl either. Since, it is only an hour drive away.

Why I ask this is, is this will be my first ball, because before I have always used house balls. Now, I am wanting to get back into it and improve further. That is why I am wondering which place y'all would recommend going to for drilling balls purchased off the internet or just for good personal service from the pro shop.

Thanks,
Aaron

I personally have not used either shop you mentioned but I have heard good things about the Plano shop, I would suggest Otis Pillow Pro Shop inside AMF Hurst Lanes. Otis and his son Billy have drilled almost all of my equipment and they are spot on what I ask for and you can bring in a ball purchased anywhere and the drill fee is the same 38.00 which includes inserts and thumb slug or you can pick from His fine selection of balls in stock at pretty good prices also. Do not be afraid to ask lots of questions, I have learned a ton from Otis over the last year, and believe me he does now his stuff!

Thanks for the reply. I will have to check it out, since it only looks to be about an hour and 45 mins to get there from where I am if I take I35 to loop 820 and around to the lanes. Gas prices are still a killer these days that is for sure.

Though, I will probably check out the plano shop first to see how they are, because they are quite a bit closer.

Metric, here is a suggestion for you..

Go to Allen Bowl and have Kurt drill your first ball. He is a great guy and his prices are better then most shops in town.

Allen Bowl is off Hwy 5 about 5-10 minutes from Plano Super Bowl.

Thanks for the suggestion jkiser. I know exactly where that is, because I have passed it several times on my way down there on highway 5. I had totally forgotten about that place.

I'll second the recommendation for Kurt in Allen.  I still think he's one of the best in the area.

Hey, so I went to see Kurt a couple of weeks ago, and I must say he was excellent with very competitive pricing on most of his equipment.

I ended up getting a Storm Street Rod and it has been working great. I only had one problem with the ball at first. I rolled 2 games and noticed that it was pulling on the top of my thumb. Thus, I took it right back to Kurt and he new exactly what was wrong. He put it back under the sander and gave a more teardrop shape to the thumb hole. Since then, I have had no problems with the thumb.

It is so nice to be able to roll more than 3 games and not have your hand fatigued. I am still getting a little used to the finger tip position though, compared to the conventional grip.

Thank you for all the suggestions and input!

Kurt is good.

Were you there this Saturday around 1:30 or so?  I was in there and someone had an issue with the ball and he had to open the thumb a little and give it the teardrop.

Nope, I wasn't in there this Saturday. It was about 2 weeks or so ago on a Tuesday. Which happened to be the day I picked up the drilled ball, and that is when I noticed the thumb hole problem after rolling 2 games there at Allen Bowl.
