SP tournament in sparks 2006
« on: October 03, 2005, 12:49:24 PM »
anybody know anything about greenbrae lanes in sparks, nv?  this is where the sp tournament is moving to in 2006 after many years at the high sierra in reno.  i know quite a few bowlers who are sad to be leaving, but are willing to give the new place a try.  i just hope that a tournament that has had a long history is not making a mistake.

Shouldn't be too bad. Full synthetic lanes and has more lanes than High Sierra. Plus the ladies SP is totally gone now so i think they will compete in ours which will bring more entries.

Why's it moving???

Greenbrae Lanes is on Pyramid Way in Sparks. Used to have my office right across the street from there. I went to High Sierra to practice. Nuff said???

Anyway - it used to be owned by Micky Archaletto - he passed away a few years ago, and his wife took it over. I have heard it has gotten better, but it would have to go a LONG way towards the road to improvement before I'd bowl there. It's the only house where I have deliberately walked out of a tournament because of the equipment. Singles and Doubles for Women's city tournament was there one year, and I walked out rather than bowl singles (I completed doubles). They even threatened in public to pull my card - but in private, all the officials said they admired my guts!

Too bad. SP and Town & Country (now High Sierra) go back a LONG time.

I think Starlight where i heard they use to hold it at is much nicer.

Bowling the 40 Framer and Bowlers Journal when the ABC National was in Town was great.

I hope they would bring the SP Tournament back there one day.

The SP was held at Starlite through 1998;  it moved to High Sierra starting in 1999.

All I know about Greenbrae is that it's renowned for high scores, and for *lots* of machine breakdowns.

Cool. I'm glad it's coming back. It's a great location - it was just such a dump I wouldn't even go in there. Obviously, that's been fixed!

i actually had a conversation with the owner of high sierra lanes on saturday during a squad of the storm mixed national.  rudy said that he did not know of any reason why the tournament directors of the sp wanted to move to another house.  he did not believe his bowling center did anything to warrant the move.  he believes that greenbrae probably just undercut him on lineage.  being just participants, we probably will never know the true story.  it was just convenient being able to stay at the atlantis or peppermill and have the bowl so close.
yes, it would be nice from a logistics standpoint if they were to move back to starlight.  i also bowled the side events there during the 2004 nationals and i agree that they have made some good improvements from the bad old days.  we could stay at a downtown hotel for storm mixed national and sp mixed during the fall.  would not matter for the spring sp tournament however.

IIRC, the reason that the SP went to High Sierra from Starlite was that the latter had just been purchased by AMF, and the new management at Starlite had told Russ that they were no longer interested in hosting the event.

However, one lingering issue that Russ has had with running the tournament at High Sierra over the past several years has been that center is smaller (24 lanes as opposed to 32 at Starlite), which meant that they had to add squads (including a few on Friday night) to accommodate the same number of bowlers.  Not only did this mean that Russ and Liz had to be at the bowl on Fridays as well as over the weekend, but a number of bowlers weren't happy at having to bowl events on Friday night.

So how would one go about getting on the mailing list for entry forms?

So right now for those who live in Reno,

What is the shot at Greenbrae lanes?

What can we expect on a fresh shot?

What type of equipment looks like it works there?

Any insights?
