Dark Code
« on: August 11, 2021, 04:30:51 PM »
The research lab at Storm has been busy and discovered a unique coverstock by combining two proven coverstocks into one. The coverstock on the Storm Dark Code is a combination of the R2S and NeX to create the ReX Pearl Reactive coverstock, also known as the "Reactor Extreme". This coverstock along with the RAD4 core provides the ideal amount of mid lane roll and backend reaction as well as awesome pin carry. This ball has something to offer any style of bowler.

Color: Obsidian
All colors do vary somewhat from the picture shown
Core: RAD4
Coverstock: ReX Pearl Reactive
Finish: 1500-grit Polished
RG: 2.50 (based on 15# ball)
Differential: 0.058 (based on 15# ball)
Recommended Lane Condition: Heavy Oil
Fragrance: Cherry Delight

Here we go! I am so excited for this release! I had huge success with the CodeX as well as the other code series balls.  This core combined with the new REX cover is something special.  The cover is is unlike any other pearl I've ever thrown.  It's earlier and stronger but it still packs a punch generating angle down lane.  Obviously if you wanted to add more teeth, you can hit the cover with an abralon pad.
I like to drill my Code Balls a little on the weaker side so I used the same layout on my Dark Code as what I have on my CodeX and Code Red.

Dual Angle Layout: 50x4.25x65
VLS: 4.25x4.5x3.75

Balls that are currently in the bag:
Zen- 50x4.25x65
Zen Master- 50x4.75x30
UFO Alert- 50x5x65

Storm Dark Code:
Coverstock: ReX Pearl Reactive
Weight Block: RAD4 Core
Finish: 1500-grit polished
Layout: 4.5 x 5 x 2
Testing on a 43ft THS with recent changes to the amount of reverse oil to help calm down the early hook that the center's lane panels have, I first found it quite challenging on the fresh to develop a good clean look, a little earlier hook then I was expecting, but once the pattern started to develop a little push of oil down lane, the overall performance of the ball became quite amazing. More control without losing any carrying power through the pins. Went to another center that has newer SPL with a longer length house pattern and found the Dark Code worked so much better on the fresh. The DARK CODE did not over hook on the pattern like similar balls I used in that same house. I tend to have over / under there when using benchmark balls like Idols and stronger ASYMS like The Nuclear Cells in this center and seemed to always be "between" balls. I found a great ball to use in this center at the start of this coming bowling season and it is the DARK CODE

COMMENTS

The Storm Dark Code features a very strong RAD4 asymmetrical core, which can flare a whole lot. The all-new ReX coverstock produces a very good front-to-back reaction. The performance you get out of the Dark Code is truly unmatched. This bowling ball has become my ‘go to’ when needing a cleaner asymmetrical ball.

Since the Dark Code has so much flare potential, I drilled my first Dark Code with my favorite pin down layout to reduce some of that available flare: 55 x 5 x 75. I am really impressed with the versatility of the Dark Code. I have been able to use this ball on multiple lane surfaces and different oil patterns. I am surprised with smooth reaction I get with the Dark Code knowing how strong this core is. Since the cover on the Dark Code is on the cleaner side, it works great on older and more ‘beat up’ lane surfaces as well.

In my opinion, the Dark Code is best when bowling on medium length oil patterns where the launch angles need to be a little bit more open. I have had much success with this ball in my recent tournaments where I needed to really open-up my launch angles. This ball is so strong that it really likes to go away from the pocket. I am looking forward to drilling another Dark Code very soon!

Ok everyone, sorry if I'm a little late....BUT...Wow what a great ball! I like to throw a ball in different houses, different leagues, a couple tournaments. Now this is for me...I hit it with a 4000 pad after I threw it a few games. For me it was going a bit to long. I have some games on it after hitting it with the 4000 pad and I'm SO Happy with this ball. Its a great ball out of the bag. I normally start standing 25 and throwing 3rd arrow (15 board) Take it out to the 10 board. In reality I have a few boards to play with this ball. LOL...the 10 pin loves me though. But hey...it was a great shot. Adjust a little and your back on it. Its a great ball....and it smells AWESOME lol!!!

I am going to start off by comparing this to the Zen. Simply put, even though one is asymmetrical and one is symmetrical they have very similar looks for me. As smooth as it rolls it never seems to quite when entering the pocket. That is big for someone like me without a ton of revs or hand in the ball. I was quite shocked with just how smooth this ball was being it is asymmetrical and REX Pearl. I typically bowl on a THS for my leagues on what is considered pretty dry. The Dark Code blends the lane out perfectly making the transition periods less dramatic. I would also like to note that the smell of this ball is AMAZING. I only wish it would hold as strong as the OG HyRoad does!

Review:
The dark code has been a hot seller in our shop. The name is great, the color is great, and the motion that the ReX cover and RAD4 core bring is even better. The cover is a blend of the NeX and R2s. What this means is that you will see a strong midlane and angular backend motion (that you would expect from a Storm pearl cover. Overall, this ball handles the lane in a very predictable way and is our current first out of bag on most patterns). The versatility is amazing and therefore can be used playing multiple parts of the lane with various speeds and rotation. The code series has never disappointed, and this is just more proof that this line is for real!!

Storm didn’t just revive the Code Black and re-brand it, they used experience to create the next generation of one of the most popular lines in recent history, The Dark Code. Storm took the ever dependable and highly successful R2S cover and scienced it up a bit by mixing in components of the NeX cover to get the R2X.

I spent some time with Scott Bijolle in the shop at Gold Crown Lanes in St. Johnsbury Vermont. Sticking with Layout option 1 (of my 3), I went with a 4.25x1.5x4. Fully knowing this was going to flare big and flip hard on the dry. Afterall, that’s basically what the Code Black did and I LOVED it. After a few shots just to find a line, I quickly found that this ball was a beefed-up version of the Black. On shots I thought might skid right through the break, the ball began shaping up in the mid-lane and instead of rolling out, it took a left turn an obliterated the pocket. I tried tightening up my angles and saw the same thing, like it was programed to know where the pocket was from any angle. If I opened it up and really threw it at the ditch, it found it’s way to the pocket with very minimal deflection through the rack.

I’ve always loved the RAD core, and who doesn’t love the R2S? Storm took tried and true technology and improved it to revive the “Code” series in what may end up being the best one yet!

My Stats

Rev Rate: 375-400
PAP: 4 ½ over by ½ up

Storm Dark Code
Core: RAD4
Cover: ReX Pearl
Surface: 1500-grit polished
Layout: 50 x 4 x 65

Storm has revitalized the famed CODE series by launching the new Dark Code. I have never thrown any balls from the series before, so you can imagine my excitement when I saw this come through. The RAD4 core wrapped in the NeX Pearl coverstock gives the Dark Code plenty of length and lots of backend motion for bowlers of all styles. I drilled my first Dark Code with one of my standard pin down layouts, 50 x 4 x 65. This places the pin below my ring finger. I was most impressed with the rounder shape I was able to achieve with the layout. Typically, balls with this much backend motion can be uncontrollable for my style, but I did not see that here. This ball clears the front part of the lane easily and gets around the corner strong. I liked it so much that I recently drilled a second one with the pin in the middle finger. My goal of this layout was to allow me to close my angles down and be able to play a little more direct. This has been a perfect combination so far as the second layout is about 5-7 boards weaker overall, but still gives that great motion off the back part of the lane. I was a huge fan of the Axiom Pearl, which also has the ReX cover. I see the Axiom Pearl (with similar layout to first Dark Code) as a few boards weaker, but it picks up a bit earlier due to the symmetric core and lower RG. The Dark Code will slot in right below the Proton Physix for most bowlers in large part due to the coverstock differences. If you’re bowling on your league night and the Proton becomes too strong or too early, the Dark Code would be a natural progression to move into.

Storm Dark CodeThe Dark Code features an extremely dense modified disc technology shape called the RAD4 Core. RAD (Radial Accelerating Disc) technology produces, bar none, more torque and entry angle than traditional asymmetrical cores. It's the new standard for high performance. Paired with the ReX cover stock, which is a mix of the R2S and the NeX covers. The Read more about review stating Storm Dark Coderesult of this, it allows the ball to still pick up in the mid-lane, but completely screams off the backend. To me this ball is pretty good mix of the Code Black and Code Red, which both were 2 of my favorite balls. This ball is very clean through the front part of the lane, slightly cleaner than the new UFO Alert. This is by far the most aggressive Asymmetrical Pearl ball I have thrown in a long time. It is the first ball out of my bag every night. I will be drilling up a 2nd one and adding some surface to it, so I will be able to start out with it when the lanes have heavy oil.

Cracked the Code
The Storm Dark Code is a ball that gives me everything I want and need on our house shot. I’ve been using it every league night on our 44ft House shot. Scores have been great 761, 730, 770 to start the season. This ball has the proven RAD4 core that has been around since the X-Factor series nearly 20 years ago.  This pearl reactive REX combines r2S and NEX covers. It rolls a bit sooner than the old Code Black. I drilled mine 4.5x4x2.  To me its on of those balls that reads the midlane well and transitions to the dry with control. Very nice clean motion off the spot. I can get away playing almost any line. Been most comfortable starting around 17 at the arrows and just bumping it out to the 5-10 area. I have a ton of area with it. It carries very well, I see a lot of those old late trip 4’s. To compare, when it gets to be too much or I need something a touch less, I switch to my shined IQ Tour Nano Pearl.  My PAP is 5-1/8 and 1/8 up. Usually around 15-16mph, I’d probably be classified between and tweener and cranker.

Review:
The Dark Code continues the tradition of strong performances from the Code series. The Dark Code offers a unique blend of NeX and R2S cover stocks. The combination offers a strong midlane with an angular backend motion. Even with this strong backend motion the ball is overall very predictable and can be enjoyed bowlers of all skill levels. I put this ball in my bag as a replacement for my Code Black and I have not been disappointed by that choice one bit. If you enjoy striking you should pick up one of these balls ASAP.

Likes: My Dark Code has my normal 65*5*45 layout, putting the pin above my ring finger and the mass bias about 3in to the right of my thumb. Initially the ball was pretty clean for me with a very defined shape through the middle and end part of the lane. It was alittle too clean for what I like to see so I touched the cover with a 1000 pad by hand very lightly just to knock some of the initial shine off. After that the ball was amazing. I have it just alittle earlier than my Zen and just a pinch smoother off the spot and alittle more overall. It is very versatile, it can be used on a variety of patterns.

Storm Dark Code

Bowlers Info: RH tweener, PAP 4-1/2 x 7/8 up, 365 RPM, 17* of Axis tilt, 60* of Axis Rotation

Ball Layout: 40 x 5 x 50

Finish: Light 3000

Storm has brought back the successful RAD4 core that was used in the Code Black and combined that with the new ReX pearl coverstock.  Now, I was really hoping that this was going to be a Code Black relaunch as that ball was something special.  I drilled my Dark Code with my previous Code Black layout putting pin over bridge, CG kicked right and boom, the left turn signal came on and it made a HARD left!  The hard read off the backend was a bit too much for my liking, very hockey stick motion and definitely bigger than the original Code Black.  I hit it by hand with 3000 and that did the trick.  This ball has done very well for me on houses that have Anvil/harder surfaces or longer oil sport conditions.  So if you're needing a bigger, strong pearl talk to your pro shop about the Dark Code and as always bowl up a Storm!

Dark Code is all i expected and then some. It features the rad4 cover wrapped in the Rex pearl cover stock. This ball clears the fronts with ease reads the mids very aggressively and makes a smooth continuous motion down lane and through the pins. Love using this ball when i am trying to open up the lane and play bigger angles. This ball is a perfect and must have in your arsenal,

Cover stock: ReX Reactor Extreme Pearl Reactive
Core: RAD4 Asymmetric  2.50 RG 0.058 Diff 0.020 Int. Diff. (15lb.)
Color: Obsidian
Finish:  1500 grit-polished
Bowler Specs:
Right Hand. PAP 4” Over 0 up
Rev Rate 400, Average Tilt, low Axis Rotation.
Speed at cameras 16.5 – 17
Layout: 4.5 x 4 x 2 (pin up)
Review:  The Dark Code is silky smooth with effortless length, late midlane read and a strong but continuous backend. Compared to the code Black, it reads the mids a little more which smoothed the overall reaction out. This ball would have fit perfectly between the Code Red and the Code Black. The Pearl ReX cover is strong enough for a decent amount of oil and skids enough to use on medium-dry.  It’s also very receptive to surface changes and different layouts. Straighter players can go up the boards and stronger/high rev players can move inside and bump it.
