Title: Pitch Purple Solid Urethane
Post by: BallReviews-scodaddy21 on March 06, 2020, 09:04:23 AM
The Storm Pitch Purple carries on the successful line of Pitch bowling balls in the Storm line up. The Pitch Purple introduces the Capacitor Core which offers the control and characteristics of the core in the Pitch Black but also results in the great backend motion that Storm prides itself in. This mid performance ball offers a high level of control for aggressive players while finesse players will find plenty of power at the pins. The Pitch Purple generates a long and smooth roll on difficult lane conditions due to its higher RG and lower differential. The Rev-Control Urethane coverstock was designed to offer a urethane midlane reaction as well as a responsive backend reaction giving this ball great maneuverability.

Color: Purple Solid
All colors do vary somewhat from the picture shown
Coverstock: Rev-Controll Solid Urethane
Core: Capacitor
Finish: 1000-grit Abralon
RG: 2.57 (for a 15# ball)
Differential: 0.022 (for a 15# ball)

Introducing the Pitch Purple, the newest urethane release in the Thunder line. The Pitch Purple uses the new Rev Controll Urethane Cover wrapped around the  Capacitor Core. The layout I used was 4 x 4 x 2 which is a stronger layout for me that puts the pin and cg stacked out to the right of my fingers and thumb. Right off the bat I was super impressed with the Pitch Purple. The Pitch Purple gives me that urethane motion but with that little extra pop off the back-end. Because of the extra down lane motion that it gives me, it allows me to get a little more comfortable with it and be able to get in a little deeper with it. If you are looking to get a urethane ball, then look no further then Pitch Purple.

The New Storm Pitch Purple is a definite departure from previous Urethane releases. There's never been a Urethane this CONTINUOUS!

The new Rev Controll cover is juiced up much like the Fever Pitch but where the other Urethane releases would hook stop when covering boards the Pitch Purple just keeps coming.

I tested the Pitch Purple of a house shot that had a league session bowled on it prior. There was surprisingly no part of the lane I couldn't play with the pitch purple. I started off very near the friction and had to be sure I kept my hand up the back but it performed spectacularly when i did. I could play very straight angles at the pocket and even saw the cover save some shots I got right. I then tried moving in a bit and rolling it more to the track. The amount of area I opened up amazed me as I was able to miss as much as 10 boards down-lane and still get the ball back and through the rack for a strike. Just out of curiosity I decided to see how far left I could get and even from 5th arrow I was seeing consistent hook and carry. As my rev-rate is only in the 300 range I'm very impressed with this ball!

Anyone who liked the increased power of the fever pitch but wished they could stay with it longer and cover more boards, this is your ball!

The Pitch Purple is AWESOME!. As a 300 rpm rev player I am never able to throw a urethane, however from what I saw after throwing the Pitch Purple I will definitely have it in my bag for those shorter length sport patterns. The biggest thing I notice is that it is continuous on the backend. Most urethanes I have thrown just roll out right away and I cant get them down lane.  The Pitch Purple is like a low end reactive ball with more controllable back end.  It is great on medium to dry lane conditions. For me I have to play more up the outside, but doesn’t seem to quit down lane.  I have mine drilled 45 x 4.25 x 40, which gives me a lot of versatility.  If you have trouble with regular urethane balls this one is for you. You wont be disappointed with this one.

The Pitch Purple is scrumdiliumptious.

WEIGHT BLOCK: Capacitor Core
WEIGHT: 15lbs
RG: 2.57
DIFF: 0.022
COVER: REV Control Urethane
OUT OF BOX: 1000 Git

Patterns used for review are HP modified.
Pattern A: 40Ft, 24 Mls
Pattern B: 43Ft, 29 Mls

PLAY
The Pitch Purple was able to play both patterns, but favored Pattern A. On Pattern A the Pitch Purple was a beast. I still had a decent look and Pattern B but had to be careful with my speed.  Higher rev players would just eat up both patterns.

For my style I've never considered a urethane.  I understand the purpose of urethane but, after throwing this purple beast I will definitely reconsider.

Pattern A:
On this pattern the ball rolled extremely well.  I could play all over the lane. Take some hand out and go straight up the boards, no problem.  Move 10 left and give it some hand, no problem.

Pattern B:
Outside was definitely better for my style.  As I migrated inside I had to be more aware of my speed control and hand position.  Definitely needed to keep this one rolling. Any slight skid and just couldn't carry.

LOW DOWN: If you never considered urethane the Pitch Purple will make you want to reconsider. #StormNation

Storm Pitch Purple Ball Review by PJ Haggerty

Over the last several years, Urethane has made a huge resurgence back into the game.  I continue to see more and more urethane in league and tournament play.  To be honest, it took me a while to jump on board because I wasn’t sure how to use it.  Urethane creates a very different shape compared to reactive, but if used correctly, it can be extremely effective.  The newest urethane addition to the Storm line is the Pitch Purple.

I’ve drilled one Pitch Purple so far and love it.  It’s so much different than the other urethane balls I’ve drilled (Pitch Black, Hot Cell), and can be used on so many different patterns.  The one I drilled is mapped out as: 4 x 2.5 with no weight hole.  I drilled the pin through my ring finger and have left the surface alone.  The Pitch Purple provides a clean motion through the front part of the lane with a slower / smoother response time.  I’m truly impressed with the motion it provides.  It’s unlike anything else in the line and compliments the Pitch Black perfectly.

If you’re looking for a new urethane ball to add to your arsenal, the Pitch Purple should be the one!

One of the things I struggle most with is using urethane, I do not have a huge rev rate to make most of them go into a roll soon enough. This ball comes with the same capacitor core, with a RG of 2.57 and a diff of .022, that has been in the pitch black and pitch blue. It is wrapped with the Rev-Controll Solid cover stock at 1000. I used a strong layout on this ball as I did not expect it to be as strong as it was, with a 4x4x1 layout.
This ball has surprised me a many other at a Match Maker. I recently worked one with Travis and one of the bowlers mentioned he was going to give it a try but he called it the spare ++. After a few shots he brought it back and said it was a lot more ball than he realized it was going to be. I agree this ball has a lot of potential especially on light oil conditions. It is very smooth and predictable but shapes down lane very well. Please understand that this ball will let you know when you make a mistake as it still has urethane characteristics.
For me this ball will be best utilized on short patterns like cheetah where there is plenty of friction. It is not a spare ball or anything of the sort, it has a very specific place in my bag for tournaments as we know different houses play differently.

I for one am not a urethane lover they usually don’t match up with my game style. With my rev rate I don’t ever find myself needing to throw a urethane in league or tournaments I can usually throw a ball that is slow to create the same shape as it. I however did drill up a Pitch Purple just to see if it does hook a lot more than any other urethane that storm or Roto Grip has released. I must say that to start I was very impressed with the way it picks up in the mids and has great smooth shape. If i squared up I was able to get great reaction out of this ball with great entry angle. Throwing it with the Pitch Black I can say that for me the Purple is about 5 boards more and drives through the pocket without hesitation. So for all you low rev rate/speed bowlers this might be a ball that will allow you to get the benefits of a urethane like the power players!!!! I am excited to try this on more short patterns to practice using urethane and reaping the benefits of it. Overall i think this will be a look that a lot of bowlers are missing and need to have in their bag

I drilled my PITCH PURPLE up 50 x 4 x 30. This is normally a much earlier reading layout for me. I have thrown it so far at box finish which is 1000 abr.

I threw my PITCH PURPLE side by side with a newer PHAZE III and OMEGA CRUX as I drilled all 3 at the same time. The PITCH PURPLE is definitely a slower response down lane compared to both of those balls. I was pleasantly surprised at how much better I could get it to hit than the last urethane ball I drilled which was a FEVER PITCH. I like the motion out of this one and would love to be on some short patterns to see how this one will fare.

I would say for more rev challenged players who want to try out urethane, give the PITCH PURPLE a try first.

The new urethane ball from Storm is the Pitch Purple.  Urethane has been real popular lately on the shorter patterns we see today and with the PBA tour guys. But for me I havent had a lot of success throwing the Hot Cell, Pitch Black, Fever Pitch.  My rev rate just isnt high enough with the previous urethane releases.  I drilled mine 5 x 4 x 2.5. But with the new Pitch Purple I can see myself using this ball more.  Especially on the shorter sport patterns and later blocks of tournaments.  The Pitch Purple gives a little extra pop at the backend where the other urethanes didn't. Very controllable for me stay on top of the friction. The Pitch Purple id going to great for the sub -500 rev rate bowlers for are looking for the urethane option!

Let’s just say that 99% of us aren’t Jesper Svensen, Osku or Belmo. I don’t have a 600 rev rate and throw the ball 20 MPH. And i can’t split half boards on the lanes like those guys. So, I use urethane when the lanes have very little volume or very short oil or a combination of both. I’m not a urethane hater. I have bowled a few 800’s and 300’s with urethane (and polyester) but I know my limitations. The truth is, this ball rolls like urethane but finishes on the backend like a reactive ball. For me, it’s kind of like a Pro Motion that had a little baby. It’s cleaner up front, silky smooth on the backend and enables me to play in the high friction areas of the lane without any over-reaction. I did a pin up 4.5” pin to PAP and a 2.5” pin buffer layout on this one to keep it fairly strong but not defeat the purpose of the ball. The Capacitor Core has a high enough RG and low Differential to keep the ball from flaring too much. The Rev Controll solid coverstock keeps the ball from rolling too early but allows it to have more recovery downlane than a typical pure urethane cover. It fits between the Pitch Black and a lower end reactive like a Tropical Storm. So, cleaner than the Pitch Black and smoother on the back than a reactive. Use it on blitzed lanes, screaming backends and anytime you need to keep your angles closed. I drilled one of these for my girlfriend who is rev challenged and has very slow ball speed (12MPH). She bowled a 220 game with it first game! Hope she doesn’t read this. But, that being said, this ball is a great option for bowlers in a similar situation. #Stormnation

Storm Pitch Purple

65 x 3 3/8 x 15

This has been a very anticipated ball for me.  Please understand the urethane bowling balls are very niche!  On most lane conditions Storm has lots of options for every lane condition.  Urethane bowling balls are best used on short oil conditions, typically we want to embrace that early hook and use it to our advantage.  If it hooks early it will be very controllable down lane.  What happens with the Pitch Black and other traditional urethane is the cover starts to oil shine itself and produces less and less hook.  Pitch Purple is the perfect compliment to the Pitch Black.  It gets through the front easier and has more continuation and overall hook, while still maintaining a urethane-ish performance.  For those of you that didn’t get enough hook out of the Pitch Black, this one is for you.  For those of you that have the Pitch Black and love it, this will compliment it perfectly.  Drill it the same and watch strikes fill your frames!

Storm Pitch Purple

Coverstock: Rev-Controll Solid Urethane

Core: Capacitor Core

First off, I will say that I am not a huge fan of urethane. I feel that the average league bowler has little to no use for it. I think too many bowlers see the professionals use them on TV and think since they do well with them that the average bowler could too. The fact is that most bowlers don't see the patterns that urethane is really made for.

But...I was pleasantly surprised with the Pitch Purple. The ball had a bit more reaction that I have seen in other Storm urethanes. This ball gave me the ability to move right a control the my entry angle on a few different patterns (Allen Pattern, 35ft ths, 40 ft ths). It actually reminded me of the reaction I could get from a light oil/entry level reactive ball.

I have alway had issues moving right. With the Pitch Purple I could hold a shot releasing at 10, playing to 2-3...NOT my comfort zone. I think the Pitch Purple will continue to help me learn to move right...something my game has definitely lacked in the past.

Review:
The New Pitch Purple Urethane is a good looking Solid and an upgrade on the Pitch Black in my opinion. This new version uses a very good core called the Capacitor Core that delivers control and paired with the new urethane cover a nice back end and hit from a urethane ball. What I am seeing is a bit more hook than the Pitch Black mostly in the back end of the lane. The Pitch Purple is a bit cleaner through the front than I expected from regular urethane. Sometimes we give up some hit when we don’t use reactive but this ball will help in that regard because it creates more entry angle to the pocket. I also have some miss area to the dry with the Pitch Purple. The Pitch Purple has a different shape than other urethane balls and if a Pitch Black was not quite enough hook the Purple may just fit the bill for those bowlers. The Pitch Purple should be a good choice for the no thumb or high rev crowd or when the lanes get tore up after a lot of games thrown. I can also see this being big with the college bowlers. We have drilled a few of these and I like what I see from the power players as well as low speed stroker styles. This is more of a niche ball to help build an arsenal but another very good piece to have in the bag.

Summary:
The Pitch Purple delivers more hook than the Pitch Black.
This ball has a nice back end for a Urethane ball.
The Pitch Purple will be a nice addition to round out an arsenal.
The Pitch purple should be a hit for high rev or college bowlers.

The Pitch Purple got some early press with Chad McLean releasing a video of him throwing it on Instagram.  The Hype was real, the Pitch Purple Shapes down lane much more than the Pitch Black.  Both using the Capacitor Core, the Pitch Black reads much sooner and is much smoother down lane.  The Pitch Purple is cleaner in the front than the Pitch Black allowing it to create much more shape down lane. I also threw my Hot Cell With it, and the Hot Cell popped a little more down lane but wasn't as continuous as the Pitch Purple.  For people like myself who likes to see more of that shape down lane, the Pitch Purple is the Urethane ball for you!  This ball is best used on shorter patters, 37' or less.  I am not a person who will use Urethan on a house shot, so you won't see me throwing it on that.

Been bowling for 46 years and I have NEVER rolled an urethane ball like this before. During SPI Matchmaker events alot of the attendees would love this ball. So not knowing quite how to layout it out because of what I was seeing from the demos, I finally settled on 40 x 5 3/4 x 20 after talking with Travis Celmer, to help the back end to be a little sharper, and I was in total AWE by the motion and how much even in heavier oil in the mid to center part of the pattern, this ball to me a stronger version of the Hustle INK, which is becoming my all-time favorite ball to use on league nights. When leagues start back up after the virus scare is over, this will be the very first ball that will hit the pins for me.

I can make urethane hook on the backend?!?!?!  Truth be told, I was not going to give this ball a try as my lower rev rate and urethane would always equate to early hook and minimal backend motion.  I tried one at a Storm Matchmaker on fried up lanes and man oh man, where has this been for so long???  I could clear the fronts and make a urethane turn the corner on the backend, I’ve NEVER been able to do that!  I can’t tell you how excited about having this in my arsenal for when things get really tricky on sport patterns.  My Purple is drilled with a 4” pin just above my ring finger and CG kicked dead right and the finish OOB.  I tried this on the extreme outside on fresh league shot and went 237, 223 for the 1st two games.  Super impressed that I can use it on even fresh league patterns.

If you’re like me who couldn’t use urethane in the past, your solution has arrived!  This piece is a lot more versatile than urethane traditionally is.  Go talk to your PSO about this piece and continue to bowl up a Storm!

The Pitch Purple is the latest urethane-like offering in the Thunder line, joining it’s step-sibling the Pitch Black.  The Purple has the Rev Controll cover, which contains additives to give it a more resin like shape, but it’s still unmistakably urethane.  While something like the Pitch Black has a truer urethane feel, super early and very smooth, the Purple clears the heads quite a bit easier, instead digging in about halfway down the lane and continuing through the pocket.  The Pitch Purple is a great compliment to the Black for when you have to start moving left and still need the urethane shape, but can’t bend the Black enough.  I wouldn’t say it’s anything you can swing the whole lane with due to the lower amount of flare and carrydown that will create, but for me it accomplishes the goal of bridging the gap more between the Pitch Black and typical reactives.

Urethane has become a vital piece of my tournament bag of the last few years and I have had a lot of success with it, so needless to say my eyes got big when I saw the announcement of the Pitch Purple. I drilled mine 3.5 x 45* to match my Pitch Blacks.

Wow was all I could say when I first threw the Pitch Purple. It hooks about an arrow more than my Black with more shape down lane. The Pitch Purple reads oil patterns like a urethane ball but rolls like a weaker IQ Tour. When the Pitch Black doesn’t pick up and hook quite enough, the Purple is the perfect compliment. If you are a player who was not able to get traditional urethane balls to hook enough, The Pitch Purple will most likely give you the shape that higher rev players create with balls like the Pitch Black.

I see myself having a closet and bag FULL of Pitch Purples!!!

Storm's Pitch Black has been a staple of the serious tournament bowler for several years now... and now it has a sidekick! The new Pitch Purple combines the same Capacitor core (2.57 RG, 0.022 diff) with the Rev Controll Solid Urethane coverstock, a tweaked version of the Pitch Black cover that provides a bit more projection and downlane responsiveness. What does this mean? It still feels VERY MUCH like urethane, but that extra bit of downlane punch goes through the pins better than any urethane I've ever used. Even for someone like me with a few extra MPH, this ball is a lot of fun to use and honestly makes me want to figure out how to use it in more situations. And if it's got this much utility PLUS it's this fun... how can you go wrong?

Review:
This is the kind of ball people come into the shop asking for 2… one for now, and one for later! Without seeing or feeling the coverstock one would think this ball is reactive and not urethane based on ball reaction. Compared to the Pitch Black this ball is stronger (about 5 boards on the approach for us) with a later and stronger entry angle into the pocket. The Pitch Purple is one of those rare bowling balls that comes around every so often that EVERYONE must have… similar to the original Hy-Road. After throwing the Pitch Purple for a few games you really notice how well this ball holds the pattern. It is strong enough to come back if you miss a little to the right and does not jump in the dry boards if you pull it left. If you have not thrown urethane before or have tried it in the past and have not been impressed then you need to find a matchmaker and try this out… it does not disappoint. If you are a urethane lover and need something that reacts more like a reactive bowling ball when the lanes have some oil then this is a must have in your bag. There is no doubt you will see this ball being used A LOT in tournament play.

The new Pitch Purple is just another fantastic ball in the Storm Thunder line using the Rev Control Urethane Coverstock! This is the perfect ball in the arsenal between the IQ Emerald and the Pitch Black! The Pitch Purple has more backend than the Pitch Black and Fever Pitch and tends to drive through the pocket harder than the Fever Pitch which for me was a happy surprise! For Sure a ball every tournament bowler should have in their bag!

The Pitch Purple has the new Rev Controll Urethane cover wrapped around the Capacitor core also in the Pitch Black. I have thrown the Purple on short and medium sport pattens and shorter house patterns. I find the Purple to have a somewhat familiar feel of the Pitch Black with at least 3-5 boards more hook overall probably due to how clean (for a urethane) it is in the front part of the lane. The Black is just much much earlier and smooth. I think the Purple is a great compliment to the Black and short pin balls like my Crux Prime.

I was very excited for the release of the Storm Pitch Purple because of the success I have had throwing the Pitch Black and the Pitch Blue. The Pitch Black is a ball that I try at every tournament, and most of the time the ball I throw the entire day. The Pitch Purple is proving to be a great compliment to the Pitch Black because of how much more it can hook down lane. I feel very comfortable moving into 20 and playing fairly deep with this ball. With the Pitch Black I can never get left of 15 at the arrows. I can get the Pitch Purple to hook back from right of 5, reminding me of the reaction of a reactive bowling ball. It has more back end motion than I thought was possible, but still has the control of a urethane and can be used playing outside as well as inside.

The Pitch Purple the newest urethane release by Storm featuring the rev control urethane cover. If you loved the pitch black but wished you could get a little more hook out of it. You got it with the pitch purple. Perfect complement to the pitch black or the perfect urethane ball if you don’t havev one in your bag. If you are a tournament bowler this is a must have.

The Pitch Purple is the latest Thunder Line release from Storm, the bowler's company. The Purple has a new coverstock called Rev Control Urethane. The Pitch Purple uses the Capacitor core that was in the Pitch Blue and Pitch Black. The numbers in 15lb weights are 2.57 Rg and 0.022 differential. The Purple comes from the factory with a 1000 grit abralon finish.

The Pitch Purple has a unique cover material, in that it is cleaner with a little more pop than that of traditional urethane when using the same surface prep. The Pitch Purple also covers more boards than most all urethane balls on the market today. I drilled the Purple with a 4 x 3 (4” pin, 3” pin buffer) layout. This layout is basically my benchmark layout, and gives me the most usability on the widest range of patterns. Comparing the Purple to 3.75 x 3 Pitch Black, the Purple is a 3 and 2 move in, with more continuation through the backend. The Purple doesn’t lane shine as quick as the Pitch Black. Even though the Purple doesn’t lane shine as quickly, I still need to keep the cover clean with my shammy after every shot to have a consistent reaction. The Purple will be a good ball to use on beat up old wood lanes when my Pitch Black hooks too soon, and too even, and I need to open the pattern up a touch.

The Pitch Purple is a good ball, but is a very specific reaction. It’s more angular than traditional urethane, but doesn’t respond to friction like true reactive balls do. To me, it’s like a baby cousin to the Spec cover that is on the Crux Prime and Gravity Evolve. I think the Pitch Purple will work well for players with lower rev rates that struggle to get a Pitch Black to carry on short patterns, but see too much dart/dive with their lower end reactive equipment. Rev dominant players will see the most pattern coverage out of this ball, ranging from a big curve on low volumes, and usability on medium conditions as well. Thank you for reading my review of the Pitch Purple.
