Title: 2D, Nomad Pearl, or Hy-Road?
Post by: yo on July 14, 2009, 03:39:41 AM
looking for a good medium lane condition ball that i can use on a lot of conditions. basically a go to ball. i have a rouge cell but that is WAY too much ball to use on a medium lane condition. i just got into storm and roto grip and cant be any happier. i used to throw ebonite and the one pearl was my favorite ball. looking for something similar. thanks!

I can't comment on the Nomad Pearl but the Second Dimension and Hy-Road are very similar in hook and reaction shape when at the same surface with the same layout. I preferred my Hy-Road over the 2D and kept it, sold the 2D due to too much overlap.

I think it depends on the person.  I have had a hyroad which I sold and I have a second dimension.  For me the the 2nd dimension worked better for me on a house shout mine had more drive and overall hook then the hyroad.  For me it felt like I had to really hook the ball to get my Hyroad to move like I wanted. Either way they are both great choices.

Also to add to I think the nomads look great I have both on order.  Whatever way you go they are all great equipment.

For a bench mark ball I can't see anything really beating the Hyroad for most people.  rctc noted that for him it was the opposite and I ran into the same problem with the Virtual (I hated it).

However, looking at how many are being thrown and the success that the Hyroad has had vs the others I would have to say it is the way to go.  The Hyroad is also a ball that responds great to surface changes. S

It would also depend on how you typically match up diff's and rg's.  Take a look at which balls that you typically have had good success with and then check out their diff's and rg's and then compare those to the balls in question.

I concur that both the Hy-Road and 2nd Dimension at box condition there is overlap.  I have both balls - Hy-Road I keep at 4000 abralon and 2nd I keep at 2000 and with the surface differences they complement each other nicely.

If I were in your shoes and was looking for a ball down from the Rogue Cell I'd go with the Hy-Road probably at box polish.  Both balls are hybrids while the Rogue is stronger both due to the cover and core.  I think you should be happy with that 1-2 punch.

Cell Pearl will be closer to the Rogue than all the other balls mentioned here.  A 3 ball combo with:

Rogue
Cell Pearl
Hy-Road or Nomad Solid

would be a nice 3 ball set covering heavy to medium - medium light

Got it.  Quick analysis -

Rouge and Virtual at box finish are REAL close IMO.  Change one of them to 1000 or 2000 abralon in order to get a smoother and earlier ball and you will be fine.  I get the Cell Pearl under these - great ball with more length than Rouge and Virtual.  Fast and Mars are not really that close IMO.  The Fast is MUCH stronger, earlier, and more angular than the Mars.  I am not a fan of the Tropical (you will find others who are).  For me the Tropical is only useful for beginner bowlers.  Now that I get your thinking I would still say you are missing a real benchmark ball for medium.  I'd go with:

Virtual Gravity @ 1000 or 2000
Rouge Cell
Cell Pearl
Nomad or Hy-Road
Mars or Neptune

is a cell pearl and a nomad that far apart from eachother? the tropical is ok. i have one already and thought about taking it back out. i can do without it i suppose.

Cell Pearl and Nomad Solid are very different.  Cell Pearl is sym. and uses the Cyto. pearl cover, Nomad is sym. and has a milder cover (ultra vision is a medium strength reactive).  The end result is a more angular Cell Pearl that is also a bit earlier.

You started off this thread saying you were looking for a 'go to ball' that can be used on a lot of conditions.  Polished or 4000 abralon sym. solids or hybrids fit that mold for me - a benchmark ball.  In the current Storm and Roto lineup that would be either the Hy-Road or Nomad Solid.  For me the Cell Pearl is a great ball but does NOT fit in that slot... it is a bit too strong to call a benchmark ball.

So you are saying the Cell Pearl is earlier and more angular than the Nomad Solid, correct?  Where would the Nomad Pearl fit in?

Correct with the Cell Pearl - Nomad Solid comparison.  I have yet to drill a Nomad Pearl for anyone but I would assume it would be a bit longer with a similar - maybe slight bit more angular to the solid.  Keep in mind the Nomad solid/pearl covers are basically the same as the Grand Illusion / Illusion.  They are updated balls replacing the cores with the rotary core (specs. are close to the Illusion cores).

I think Britton did a comparison and the Nomads are just a bit stronger than the Illusions but still a step down from the Cells.  Maybe Britton if you get a chance can you jump in here?

so how would a cell pearl compare to a hyroad then? i talked to my proshop guy today and he recommended getting this line up.

rouge
cell pearl
hyroad
natural

sorry for being so indecisive.. i just changed weights and wanna make sure i get a good line up. thank you everyone for your input.

If this helps at all, I just got my arsenal back in tune and a portion of it looks like this,

Hyroad
2nd Dimen.
Natural

The Cell Pearl is alot more ball than usually advertised. "Bench Mark" as you originally stated lays near a weaker solid, or something that is not super radical in its ball motion. Hyroad is a great, I mean great benchmark. You have the best of both worlds when solid meets pearl.

Darn close to the lineup I originally said, so it sounds good to me!

In all seriousness this is a good lineup.  I am not familiar yet with the Natural but would assume based on it being urethane that it is a good fit on the dry side.

With the line up below, you couldn't go wrong. Get some abralon pads and cleaner and have a fun season.

Seriously though, Rogue is versatile and an oiler. CP is very good and can be touched up with 2000abr to bring it closer to ball down with. Hyroad is also versatile. Then you have the Natural for a combo spare/torched ball.

I don't know if i'd leave that big of a gap with the Cell Pearl Hyroad down to the Natural, if it were me i'd suggest a polished storm Furious or the Fast. The Hy-Road is pretty close in total hook to the Cell Pearl, just remember that, but if you see a good deal of oil or are speed dominant what you suggested would be fine other wise i'd suggest swapping the Hy-Road for something weaker.

Magic

I was thinking the same thing and almost replied earlier, but I assume he will drill the CP strong and the Hyroad med-to-weaker.

I wasn't even thinking he needed the CP, but free is free :-)

I was thinking he might want to sell it or trade it in to the pro-shop and go

Rouge
Hyroad
Fast/Mars
Natural

Drill Cell Pearl 4x4 and Hy-Road 5x3 pin above and you will be OK.  Hy-Road will give you a smoother look no matter what layout.
