3-ball Arsenal - Your thoughts?
« on: October 26, 2007, 10:21:41 AM »
I'm thinking about retiring my excessive, outdated 5-ball arsenal and replacing it with a new 3-ball arsenal (including spare). I'm wanting to buy two of the same ball and use different layouts, top weights, pin placements and such to cover the majority of lane conditions and surfaces out there.

I consider myself a 'power tweener' with medium ball speed (15-16 mph), medium revs, about 45 degrees of axis tilt and I track high close to my fingers and thumb. My PAP is about 4 1/2" over and about 3/8" up.

Based on the video reviews I've seen so far, I'm considering the Storm Sure Fire. It looks to be very versatile so I can play different parts of the lane using the same layout, condition and surface. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Fire Line from Storm is a 2-piece construction (weight block inside resin, no filler). I've always preferred this type of construction since it has a higher CoR for better pin action and carry. And this also allows the thick coverstock shell to be very durable and long lasting. And since it's a mid-performance ball, it's a great value to boot.

I've also considered Legends/Lane Masters, but no one in my area owns or sells their equipment. So I have no first hand knowledge besides what I've seen online. Not to mention their high end lines are more expensive than the Sure Fire. Since they recently produced a mid-performance, 3-piece construction (with filler) line of balls with no difference in CoR to their high end line, I'm curious as to the durability of the coverstocks over time.

What do you think? I'm open to any comments, critiques and suggestions. And I thank everyone in advance for any advice.

I haven't thrown the Sure Fire, but I've thrown its pearl counterpart, the Spit Fire.  Fantastic ball.  I absolutely love the pin action it gets.  When I have no look at the pocket, I can almost always break out my Spit Fire and just keep a tight line in the oil, aim for light swisher pocket, and just knock pins around.  I was absolutely lost last Saturday night and used that technique to shoot a 299.

You may be well served to get a Sure Fire and a Spit Fire just to have a little more options when the lanes get drier.  The all-pearl Spit Fire would give you more length in general when the heads start to go away compared to the solid/pearl hybrid Sure Fire.

Just my thoughts.  Your mileage may vary, of course.

Dan, you may be onto something there. I'll definitely consider that 1-2 punch combination. I'm sure they're the same price. Thanks again for the advice.

In addition to what Dan just suggested, would it be better to use the same layout on both balls? Or perhaps a stronger layout on the Sure Fire, and a weaker layout on the Spit Fire?

Well, I've had the Sure Fire for a little over a month now.

I'm a low speed (16-18 mph off my hand) with about 250-300 rpms and 19 degrees of axis tilt.  My PAP is 4 1/2" over, 1" up.  I drilled up a Sure Fire as follows:

-1 1/2 inch pin
-~2.5 oz. of top weight
-Pin 4 3/4 in. from PAP over the bridge
-CG rolled out slightly (about 4 1/2 in. from PAP)
-Small hole drilled on the VAL a little below my PAP

As you can see, I drilled it for a more skid-flippy reaction, and I will say that this ball shows absolutely no quit on the backend.  I love the reaction, but I do have to be careful when I'm playing straight because it can jump high.  It does squirt a bit on oil, but that is the drill and not the cover at all.  A great ball, and it is versatile, but for me, on the hook side of versatile.

I would say that it is a great idea to start an arsenal, but for you, I would probably use a more controlled drill on it.  Probably something like 4.5 pin-pap under the bridge, CG 4 in. from pap and a medium hole put in around the midline-VAL intersection.  This should keep it very consistent on the backend and make sure it won't squirt at all.  I'd probably then use a similar drill on the Spit Fire.  However, I would use a higher pin (over your bridge, and in a slightly weaker position) and try to keep the CG near the center, then only add a weight hole if needed.  I think that should give you a lot of different looks with the two balls and keep them from being condition specific.

Just my random musings, feel free to take it with a grain of salt.

for me i have the sure fire drilled a little more aggressive then i did on my spitfire and like dan said that would be a great one two punch then maybe look at something like the jolt for when the lanes get torched since in my opinion there a lil smoother off the dry then the tropical storm

How about a T-Road Solid and Pearl?

Both versatile and they compensate each other.

Personally if you are only going to have two balls I would suggest the Special Agent and the Spit Fire, nuf said.

I am hesitant to recommend the T-Road Pearl because it is soo strong off friction and you will encounter Friction when the Special breaks down the shot.  You can always put the Special in the polisher for 5 minutes if it is too strong to begin with.

See I like the T-Road Pearl more than the Spit Fire...  Maybe it depends on the individual.

Spit Fire is an awesome ball. It picks up in the mid lane very well and has a nice backend motion. T-Road Pearl is longer and stronger.

Thanks again for everyone's thoughts. It has really given me some options on what do to. Like dlenart said, I'm looking for the best multiple choice answer. So far it looks like everyone's opinions are all good choices. And I do plan on speaking to my pro shop staff for their input as well.

Btw, I know this is a Storm thread, but I just noticed Bowler's Paradise is selling Track Equations for 39.99 each for 16 lb + shipping. I'm also considering that option too.

Looks like I have lots of work to do.  Thanks again to all.

I'm going to agree on the Special Agent/Spit Fire 1-2 combo being a good chioce as well.  Whenever I'm using my Special Agent, I can almost always switch to my Spit Fire when the heads and midlane start getting dry and play the same area of the lane, but get that extra length but get about the same angle to the pocket.  Tuesday night when the lanes started to dry, I moved left four boards with my Special Agent before the ball started getting too touchy on the midlane, so I took my Spit Fire and moved back to the right three boards, almost exactly where I was the game before, and had a great look at the pocket again.

Dan you think the Spit Fire goes under the T-Road Solid?

The Spit Fire is a pearl, and it's the older Reactor coverstock that pushes a little more through oil.  It's definately a step down in oil-grabbing potential from the T-Road Solid, or even the T-Road Pearl.  If you want to have a big arsenal and want to have many balls available, the T-Road Solid would be the ball to go to when the shot first starts to break down too much for the Special Agent (Steve Jaros did just that in the USBC Masters this week, in fact).  But if you want to have a smaller arsenal, you want something solid and you want something pearl for when the lanes are getting a little drier.  In that case, I would go with the Spit Fire since it will give a little more predictable reaction off the dry when the lanes are breaking down.

All in all, it comes down to how much money you want to spend and how many balls you want to bring with you each night.

I bought a Special Agent and a Spit Fire back in February and they compliment each other well. They cover between 80-90% of the house conditions I see.

I did notice a larger separation between them at Nationals, on sport shots, PBA Leagues and some tournaments. They still worked on these patterns but switching balls required much larger moves than I was expecting. For example at Nationals my Special became too much when I was playing 25-10. I pulled out the Spit Fire expecting to play 20-10 since they're usually about 5 boards apart on house shots. After a washout and bucket I ended up playing 15-10. I just bought an Agent to go in between them and that's worked out well so far.

I prefer the Spit Fire over the T-Road Pearl. The Special Agent is a great ball. But my choice would be Spit Fire and Attitude Shift these are two great choices just my opinion.
