Compliment a HyRoad Pearl
« on: February 24, 2014, 12:53:03 PM »
My dad recently got a HyRoad Pearl, which is his first new ball in a decade.  The ball has been great for him, and he's excited about bowling again.  After years of averaging in the low 180's, he'd bumped his average up to 195 by averaging over deuce since getting the new ball.

Dad tracks a bit on the high side and he throws the ball a bit on the slow side.  His revs match his speed fairly well.

The HyRoad Pearl is giving him excellent length and a huge back-end snap.  But in the third game, as the lanes dry, it can bee too much snap.

What do you Storm aficionados recommend as a smoother reaction when Dad can't control the HyRoad Pearl?
Good luck & good bowling

What you are characterizing as too much snap is actually the ball starting early as the track breaks down.   It is very difficult to find a ball that will compensate for breakdown.  It is more important for us older guys to be able to follow the oil in as the shot breaks down.   I run into this situation all the time be it on house shots or tournament conditions.  On house shots I might start with my Hyroad Pearl at 8-10 board.  Once the shot starts to burn in that area the only ball in my bag that would keep me from moving left would be my urethane ball, and carry would be problematic.  My more likely adjustment would be to jump to about 3rd arrow.  I definitely wouldn't go to something even smoother.

On THS, I will typically go to a STRONGER ball (IQ Tour Pearl or Marvel Pearl - those those two balls aren't exactly skid/snap) when I have to move in.  I am already inside of most bowlers, but the track area at the exit point can be destroyed by anyone.

I know avabob doesn't like smoother reacting equipment, but for some reason, I feel urethane (Super Natural perhaps) could be a good choice.  This would depend on the type of shot because urethane will need a defined dry area to be effective.  If you are encountering carrydown, then urethane may not be as effective.  But with really dry areas outside, I find urethane as a suitable option.  If you don't want to go that far down, then perhaps one of the Tropical Breezes.  Not sure you can go longer/snappier than the HyRoad Pearl so smoother may be your only option.
