Anyone still using the Hy-Road
« on: January 29, 2018, 06:59:40 AM »
I’m coming late to the storm party having been initially put off by the IQ Tour Fusion. That ball for me looked great to the pocket but I couldn’t carry. I dabbled with Radical before settling with Motiv. Motiv do smooth reacting solids well at the top of the bag but I struggled with the bottom of the bag until I found the Hustle Ink.

So the Hustle Ink has me thinking that the legend that is the Hy-Road could have a place in my bag and I was wondering if folks still use it and if so, under what conditions and where it sits in their arsenal for them.

As for layout recommendations, does it work better with shorter/longer pin to PAP, that high RG and lower diff for the 14lb has me worried.

Thanks in advance for the advice

Hyroad still gets tons of use. I like it on house shots to be honest for my game.
In the bag [Infinite Physix, Volatility Torque, Night Road, Phaze III, Burner Solid, Hustle AU]
*Now Testing* IQ Ruby, Renevant, another IQ Tour solid
Coming soon...???

I can't recall the last time I stepped into a bowling alley and didn't see a hyroad. It would fit above the hustle ink. It's a great medium to drying out house shot ball.

I just gave away my HyRoad - I never really matched up well with it.

However, I understand the appeal of the ball for certain bowlers.

Why do you think you didn’t match up well with the ball ? Also, it would be great to know what bowlers you think it suits.

Don't want to speak for him, but the Hyroad can be a little long for some people on some conditions, higher RG core which means it doesn't roll super heavy.  There aren't very many people it doesn't match up for, but they do exist, and that's only natural really.  I think it can be used by any type or style of bowler as long as it matches up with the condition they're on, and generally your average house shot is what it's good on, so that's why it's so good for so many people.

Lets put this way I am seriously considering buying a second one just to squirrel away which I never do even though ball is still available.  It is my transition ball and the ball I trust more than just about any other.  When Storm does finally discontinue it they better give decent warning as they are are going to sell a ton of them once word comes down.
Kind of noob when made this account so take advice with grain of salt.

I pack two HyRoads in my bag.  My 4 inch pin down works great on a fresh THS.  Then I can move to a 5 1/2 in pin up to get more length when the heads/mids get burnt.  It allows me to keep almost the same line for the night.  A great 1/2 punch that works most of the time.  I clean after every set, but both are fairly worn with a good lane shine on them.  When I do take time to get them resurfaced I have them done at 3k with polish or just 4k no/polish.

Only ball I'm considering right now is a Hustle INK, but I'll probably buy another Hy Road or two instead if Storm decides to get rid of it.

Luke's assessment is spot on.  Given my rev rate and how hard I throw (all on the leftside where there is not as much underlying friction) on a THS it went too long and did not flip as hard as other balls do.  My personal go to right now on THS is the Dare Devil Danger - which has a shiny polished cover like the HyRoad but it's stronger and its wrapped over a lower RG core that turns over earlier.  On medium and long sport patterns, the left never dries out enough or develops enough for me to even consider having a spot in my bag for the HyRoad.  And on short patterns, I don't like high RG balls.  My feeling is that those who are more balanced or rev dominant would really like this ball a lot.

And don't get me wrong, I shot 289 with it one game - so it matched up at least once.  It just didn't match up for me consistently where I felt I was going to shoot lights out with it all the time.

Storm has ZERO plans to discontinue it anytime soon.  They're already planning for its 10th bday which is several months away, and when it comes time to talk about declining sales numbers and which balls need to be discontinued, the Hyroad is NEVER brought up, not even a thought on anyone's minds.  Hyroad not going anywhere anytime soon.  Same deal with the IQ Tour Solid.  Now by all means go buy extras, but not for fear of it going anywhere . .

I bought my HyRoad after is was on the market for 6 years.  The house I bowled in had too heavy of a volume to be much use.  At my current house, it is a savior.  I am using a 5in Pin to pap to get the ball down the lane and have good snap on the back end.
14lb 15.5 mph at pins 325 Revs. Silver Coach, Ball Driller. In Bag:  Storm Pro-Motion, Hyroad X, Matchup, Code Red.

Thanks Luke and all for their comments. I saw on the Ink Hyb YouTube video that Luke did that the Hy-Road was said to be an arrow stronger Ink so that sold me. The Ink has served me well so anything that has a similar shape is a must try for me

Just drilled number 6 last week. Still every bit as good for me as my first one was. I hate it at OOB, but at a worn 2000 or a dozen games, it sees the lane perfectly on most conditions.
