AstroPhysix or Halo Pearl?
« on: November 08, 2019, 10:24:40 AM »
I'm looking to replace my HyperCell Fused with a Storm/Roto Asym Pearl.  I have had a lot of success with the Fused and also the HyperCell Skid.  So which one has looked better to you - the AstroPhysix or the Halo Pearl?  I would be using it on both THS and Sport.  Comparisons between the 2 are appreciated.  Thanks.

To me, there are some pretty big differences between the two. The Halo Pearl is a very strong pearl. It sort of reminds me of the No Rules Pearl in that it has the teeth to handle a pretty decent volume of oil, especially for a pearl. The AstroPhysix, on the other hand, seems to be best suited for medium volumes and excels when you need to get in and wheel on it.

In my world, you could very easily carry both of these in the same bag. On the THS, I think you'd be fine with either one right out of the gate as long as the volume isn't extremely heavy or bone dry. The Halo Pearl would be my choice if they were tighter, and the AstroPhysix would get the nod if they were on the medium to lighter side. Now, for Sport, I would knock the shine off of the Halo Pearl as polished pearls get awfully squirrely when they see friction, which could lead to over/under and designer leaves. However, if you put some grit to it, you may be able to tone it down and use it out of the gate on fresh mediums. In my hands, the Astro would only be good on Sport once the pattern opens up and you need to get in and hammer on it.

Obviously, this is all based on bowler, layout, surface prep, etc., but that's how I'd compare the two and when and where I'd see them used best.

Thanks Gene.

Based on your input and the Bowling This Month reviews of both balls (which were pretty much identical in describing what to expect from each) I went with the Halo Pearl.  Much appreciated.

Could have been me, the drilling, who knows. But the Halo Pearl went for ever long and then had a sharp move that gave a bit of a hook set look and I had angle issues for days.

I haven't thrown the AstroPhysix yet, BUT, if it is more similar to my Code Black then that is my vote.

Great observation, I find the Halo Pearl to be very hook/forward as well. Knock the shine off and it is significantly better.

The AstroPhysix shares the same cover as the Code Black and both are asymmetric with comparable numbers.  However, the core shapes are not very similar.  The Code Black RAD4 core is rounded and the AstroPhysix Atomic core has a bunch of jagged angles.  The difference in core shapes may have them shape somewhat differently (maybe?).

Anyway, I did not match up with the Code Black on too many occasions.  So if the AstroPhysix is anything like the Code Black, I am betting I will be better off with the Halo Pearl.  But we'll see...

Having thrown a Fused for long while, I found that ball to be very flippy with the box shine.  The Halo Pearl has the same cover I think .... so that might be the one.  The AstroPhysix is pleasantly smooth for a pearl ball.  Nothing like the Fused.  Astro has a slower transition to friction and is nowhere near as sideways as Fused.

Surprise, surprise.  I knocked some of the shine off - it just skated forever in oil and was completely uncontrollable in the dry.  It's now somewhat better than oob but not a ball I'm completely comfortable with yet.
