Gravity layout
« on: February 20, 2008, 12:46:42 AM »
Just wanted to get some opinions on how I should layout my new Gravity, I'm punching it out on Friday. I hear that the Gravity has huge backend, but I also heard that it can be uncontrollable at times. I still want the big backend reaction but I also want to be able to control it.

I punched one of these out last week, so hopefully I'll be able to answer your questions.  Storm is correct, it is an earlier revving pearl.  With that being said, it creates a reaction that is more of a strong arc off the break point, rather than a skid/snap.  The pearl cover promotes length and the earlier revving core creates a strong arc.  Being a higher speed bowler with some hand, the earlier revving action helps me from blowing through the break point.  This ball is strong, but controllable.  For me, the reaction I see is more reminiscent of a pearl particle, rather than a traditional pearl reactive.  This ball is very consistent for me and easy to control.  The Gravity is very versatile as well.  I can open up the lane with it, or I can bump up the speed a hair, and play down and in. There is plenty of back end with this piece.  Even with extremely deep inside lines where I keep the ball in the oil, I know this ball will still turn the corner.  Just in the few nights in league I have thrown it, I have had several people comment on its strength in the back end.  Once this ball turns the corner, it keeps going.  So far I am quite impressed with it and can see some good scores being posted with this ball.

out of the box for me the backend was uncontrollable. but i took a 500 abralon pad and scuffed it very lightly by hand and it did wonders.. it still had a tremendous backend  but much much more controllable and i was able to read the breakpoint much easier. i drilled it with the pin an inch above the bridge and the MB in the strong position just to the right of the thumb. i have left more 9's and 8's with this ball than any other ball i've owned though. the problem with my layout is polished its great on mediums but the breakpoint is sporadic. but scuffed on heavier conditions its great. so its only good on one condition.

What conditions do you want it for and what is your PAP, rev rate, speed, general axis tilt and axis rotation (low med high)

Yeah before I bought mine I read how it was supposed to have midlane and be smooth. Mine is drilled 4x4 and has the absolute most backend I have ever seen on any ball with ease. I couldnt control it but now I just dont hit it very hard just a smooth easy release and the ball kills.

Pin buffer will determine the backend reaction shape on this ball. The one i have is layed out 4 x 4  (pin x mb) with a 3 inch pin buffer. With this layout the ball reads the midlane with a strong but controllable move to the pocket. A smaller pin buffer will increase the angularity of this ball. I have my second one layed out with a 2 inch buffer but will not be able to report on it for  couple of months till i recover from foot surgery.
