Looking for a med to med-light oil ball
« on: November 19, 2007, 08:04:02 AM »
I’m looking to add another ball or two to my arsenal for medium to medium-light oil.  This is for a 2nd shift 5 man team where I typically start off with my Double Agent (benchmark ball) and later switch to my Special Agent.  However, my Special is pretty strong too and so I need another ball to go to when the lanes get dry.

I would guess that my revs are around 300 and my speed is around 16-17 mph.  My PAP is 5 1/4 over (no up or down) and I am more of a roller than a spinner.  Both of these balls are OOB and drilled using Storm’s #2 layout with the pin slightly under and right of my ring finger - 4 1/4 from my PAP and the MB on my PAL.  Each ball also has an extra hole on my PAL to reduce side weight.

A friend of mine suggested that I go with a high end pearl, but I’ve been told by others to look in the medium price range.  Which would be better for my situation and what balls would you suggest?

BTW… I would prefer to stick with Storm, but I’m open to other suggestions.

Tropical Storm, they work great on the medium oil. Can be aggressive if drilled up to be but the one my friend has it works great on medium to dry and its a good price.

I've had good success with the Spit Fire on a second shift league as well.  Same cover as the Tropical Storm, just a stronger core.  It all depends on how much oil you actually see.

The Jolt Reactives (Especially pearl, but solid as well) would fit the bill too.

I like my Storm Eraser Particle Pearl for that condition.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I like the idea of picking up a Tropical, but isn't this basically a dry lane ball?  It seems like a big jump to go from my Double or Special to a Tropical...

What would be good ball to fill this medium oil gap?

After reading my previous post, I thought maybe I should phase my question a little different...

Would it be better for me to get one ball to cover med/light oil or broken down conditions and use my spare ball for dry?

or...

Get 2 balls, one for med broken down conditions and one for light/dry conditions?

The Tropical sounds like it would be good for light/dry, but I'm worried that it won't handle medium oil especially if there's carrydown.

T Road Pearl is an excellent ball to switch from the Speacial Agent. I have both. The T Road Pearl will give you more length and great recovery. If you need more length with this ball you can change the surface from oob 1500 to 4000. If you need one with even less reaction try the Neptune. The Storm ball rep said the Neptune will give you more length than the Tropical line and with its huge core will give you a smoother reaction in the back. Good luck.

Hammer Cherry Vibe is a great "bang for the buck" light oil ball. I have a Blue Vibe that can handle light to medium. Nothing but positive about these balls.

Just an FYI, the Tropical is a LOT stronger than advertised.  My mom has one drilled with a pin-over-bridge type of layout (don't know the numbers on it) that covers almost as many boards as her Paradigm.  She uses it regularly on medium lane conditions.  She even had a lot of success throwing it on the Scorpion pattern with a little slower ball speed once when I was practicing with her.  It's got a little weaker core, but a strong cover.

These are all great suggestions... thanks.

One of the balls I have been looking at is the Sure Fire, but it might be a little too much ball for the condition.  I'm also thinking about the Spit Fire or T-Road Pearl.  Of course I would also want to pick up a Tropical for lighter oil.

So this is what my arsenal would look like:

Heavy/Medium - Double Agent
Heavy/Medium - Special Agent
Medium - Sure Fire or Spit Fire or T-Road Pearl
Light - Tropical
Dry/Spares - White Dot
