Ball for toasted patterns?
« on: February 06, 2011, 12:42:31 PM »
I am looking for a ball for my daughter for when the pattern gets toasted after several games bowled. She is a lower rev bowler, avg speed 14-15mph, and typically shoots from the 17 to 10 on the THS. I am hoping to find her something that can handle the medium-dry patterns. She currently uses a 15lb Pure Swing as her got to ball and follows that with her 15lb VG, but both of these balls burn a lot of energy on the drier patterns that she has experienced. Any advice??

any of the lower-end gear would probably work well for her. tropical heat would probably be the best bet from storm.

Are you talking the hybrid version? I don't believe I want her throwing pearl and it snapping to hard.

There are the two Naturals...my preference is the pearl (both are urethanes) it stores a bit of energy for a very smooth move off of dry lanes. The solid is too early for my use.

So you believe the Natural Pearl would be good? So I guess my question is....since it is a pearl it doesn't snap in the end like typical pearls do?

The Natural or Natural Pearl would be a good choice..

or possibly the Tropical Storm or the Tropical Heat..

The Brunswick Slingshot would be an excellent choice.

Not at all...very tame but smooth reaction. That's because it's a pearl -urethane- , not a pearl -reactive-. Good Luck.

If she's looking to step down from a Virtual Gravity, I'm not sure that she's really dealing with "toasty" lanes.  Sounds more like the pattern is just transitioning and she'll be disappointed with the reaction of the balls previously recommended.

Based in her style and preferred line, I would recommend you pick her up something a little stronger than a urethane or an entry level ball.  Perhaps a solid with a milder coverstock and a less aggressive core.  I'm thinking something along the line of a Brunswick Avalanche.  If it's too strong OOB, just hit it with a 4000 abralon or a touch of polish.  Some others than might fit the bill are:

900 Global Favorite

AMF Double Clutch

Columbia Burst

Ebonite Hard Ball

Hammer Grind

Roto-Grip Rising Star (hybrid coverstock)

So what do you all think about the Tropical Heat Hybrid? Too strong maybe?

I think a reign supreme will fit perfectly here.  It's stronger overall than the tropical heat hybrid.  I feel she should have no problem getting it down the lane and controling the break point.  The reign supreme has the same cover as the heat hybrid.  The core is a little stronger which should give her a more consistant reaction at the break point.  That's when the virtual just starts becoming too much.

As I said before, stepping down from the Virtual Gravity leaves a heck of a lot of options.  Just make sure that the ball she picks matches the conditions she'll be facing.  If the lanes truly are toasty, then a hybrid might be too strong...or it might be perfect.  It's a really tough call.
My goal when switching balls is to maintain a similar look to the look I had with the previous ball...unless, of course, a big move is called for by the conditions.  I'm presuming your daughter wants to do the same thing, that's why I'll stick by my recommendation of a weaker solid rather than a pearl, hybrid, or urethane.  She should be able to play a similar line with a similar look when her VG starts over-reacting or burning up.

if she is rolling a virtual gravity & a pure swing,  a urethane ball would be a huge step down.  you have a lot of choices to "ball down" to without having to go to urethane yet. i would look at an avalanche pearl or a slingshot in the brunswick line or a freeze in the columbia line or a tropical heat(reactive) from storm.

good luck with your choice.

I'm with leftyinsnellville and sport300 on this.  From a Pure Swing and Virtual Gravity your daughter definitely would NOT need something like a Natural.  I might even be inclined to say the Slingshots and Reactive Tropical might still be too weak.

Just going by her current ball choices and general speed and line, I'd have to suggest something in the lower Mid-Range area.  Vibe Series, Brawl probably would work fine even, Hard Ball/Curve Ball from Ebonite, Freeze line from Columbia, Fast/Furious Line from Storm.

Without seeing her bowl it's tough to narrow it down to a company that her ball roll works best with, but that would be the range of bowling balls I would suggest to consider.
