Hy-Road Drilling
« on: January 22, 2009, 10:22:18 PM »
Just looking for some advice on this.  Have just ordered a Hy-Road and was looking at getting it drilled with a 5" pin and 60 degree MB, pin above ring finger. I am a power stroker and am most comfortable playing up the boards. I am looking to use it as my go to ball ball once the lanes start breaking down, and my sanded balls start overreacting.

Has anyone drilled the ball similar to this, and how have they found it?

Bear in mind, there is no marked MB on the Hy-Road since it has a symmetrical core.

That sounds like a pretty decent layout for what you intend to do with the ball, but you may be surprised by its strength and backend -- I have a feeling you'll have to move in a few boards and give it some room.

My Hy-Road is drilled 4 1/2" pin to PAP, which puts the pin over my ring finger. For me, it's smooth and predictable. My Virtual Gravity is drilled the same, and the Hy-Road is significantly weaker, and I also play up the boards.

Just words of warning, I have a pin down Hy-Road and the ball is just wild on the backend, really hooks hard and sharp, reacts more like a T-Road Pearl than I expected it would. Now one of my buddies has a pin up one and it is very smooth, its a little backwards but I guess your at the mercy of more pearl or more solid in your track with the ball.

Thanks for the feedback you have given me a much better idea of what to expect from this ball, and that i am thinking correctly about the reaction of the Hy-Road. i am a high tracker, and usually drill my equipment pin above the fingers at about 5" and just move the MB/ CG around to determine how early the ball rolls. can't wait to get it drilled and use it on the lanes now.

I just bought a HyRoad and used my favorite layout which is pin above the bridge 5.5" from pap, cg kicked right and no balance hole.

The OOB cover really allows this ball to glide thru the heads.  The HyRoad also has a strong response to friction.  Mine gives a super strong backend reaction.  I would not call the reaction skid/flip but more of a skid/super strong arc.  This ball can cover a ton of boards on the backend.

I'm sure you could play up the boards with this ball if used on the correct pattern.  However, it's not weak at all!  Take a look at Norm Duke using his at the World Championships this season.  I think his had the pin next to his ring and a balance hole.  He was using it up the boards.

I would go with the layout your wanting.  I think your going to like the reaction.

I just took a look at Jeff Carters web site and he's got 7 HyRoads!  I guess he really likes that ball.  He also has like 3 T-Road solids.

thanks for the info Chi, you haven't steered me wrong yet (Hammer balls).  and yes i did see how Duke had his drilled and the line he played, but he has more touch than me, so i figure the slightly longer pin above the fingers will smooth out the reaction, as i always want control and carry over sharp hooking 'showy' type reactions.

Your totally correct!  Control and carry is king!

Theirs a lot of bowlers that like that flippy type of reaction.  I'm not one of them! lol

I think your going to like this ball.  Mine reminds me of a stronger Blue Vibe.  Same smooth type of reaction that carry's really well.
