Drilling the pin out of the Invasion
« on: February 04, 2010, 12:52:03 AM »
A post that was written under my other post (Drilling an Invasion question)stated "You then put some random layout in it, in which you drilled the pin out completely changing the dynamics of the core".

So my question is, does drilling the pin out of the ball completely change the dynamics of the core?

I don't think so, but I could be wrong.

Been told by many a ball tech,  if your going to hit the pin, make sure you drill the whole pin out...  And you did...

If you don't want to do that,  "adjust the drilling so you won't hit the pin"..

This was taken from a drill sheet...

Drilling out the pin on any ball effectively shortens the core and reduces it's differential...

BUT, the resulting RG/Diff of a drilled ball will depend on where the other 2 to 5 other holes end up...

I realize that the pin is the top of the weight block, but do you drill deep enough into the pin to even hit the weight block when drilling the pin out causing to shorten the weight block?

Depends on the shape and size of the core.  The holes are standard depth.  Drilling the pin out isn't a big deal, you just won't be able to find it again.

if you go deep  enough into the dense core, remove enough from the center. it will raise the cores RG

Jbuzz,

I thought it would lower the RG?

Officially , that may be true. But I havent seen this documented anywhere. i just think of it this way.
You have an apple. Take the core out with a corer , will it still be center heavy?
Same concept with a bowling ball core, just replace the apple stem with the pin.

At least that make sense in my brain.

Drilling out the entire pin to a standard depth for a fingertip grip will not impact the dynamics of the core enough to be discerned on the lane.

Yes!

On short pin balls, it's one of my favorite layouts.

Put your ring finger in the pin, then kick the cg in or out as you like..

Theoretically, yes, you shorten the weight block. You will inevitably change the weight block no matter how you drill it, however, and it doesn't have any more effect than drilling the ball anywhere else simply because it is through the pin.

As far as how drilling effects RG/DIFF, studies are still under way to try to firm up those answers. Often times, you can get different answers as to the effects of drilling a fit/extra holes from different tech departments. Realistically, all of these tech departments employed by ball manufacturers are filled with knowledgable people. Do we really think any of them don't know what they're doing? No, it's just one of those situations where many people have reasons/research to back their opinions, but the answers aren't definitive enough to become a true science yet.

I'd imagine the real answer to your question would be- It depends- What was the core shape originally? How big is the core exactly? How deep was the hole that was drilled? Inserts or no inserts? ETC.

It's almost unrealistic to expect any pro shop professional to have 100% of these answers. The key is, go to someone you trust and can back their opinions with logical thoughts. Also go to someone who is knowledgable with manufacturer regulations and suggestions. If you are the driller, hopefully you fit under that category. If you do not, strive to get there. We all start somewhere. I know I didn't pop out of the womb with any great knowledge of physics.

Anyhoo, kind of rambling now. I don't personally think there's anything wrong with drilling out a pin. I have a couple balls drilled that way that roll fine.

Nicanor,

Just have the thumb driled 4" deep and you will actually raise the differential in that ball.

Why would you WANT to increase this balls differential? lol. I dont know about any body elses but, mine flares a ton. I maybe get 3" max out of any of my other balls.  The Invasion Im getting around 6".
