Lighter oil
« on: June 08, 2015, 11:57:28 PM »
Looking at getting myself a lighter oil condition ball. I'm thinking of using this ball for when the lanes had a bit of use and need more push before the ball starts making it's move. Thinking of either the hyroad pearl, punch out, uproar, or a tropical breeze. Any ideas?

The Tropical Breeze is a full degree weaker ball or more than your other choices. I'd suggest telling us which balls you are currently using that are too strong.

Right now I'm using:

Jackal
Nano
Venom shock
Fusion
Lights out(retired)
Plastic

Trying to replace my lights out

Unless you've changed the surface of the Venom Shock, most of those choices, Hy-Road Pearl, & Uproar especially, are all stronger than the Shock.
The Punch Out is just a pearl version of the Lights Out which is  hybrid; so not a large difference there.

I think the Trop. Breeze is too much of a step down, personally. I'd suggest the newer Ride which is 1/2 degree stronger than the TB but a nice step down from the Shock. (I have a Shock and a Tropical Breeze; had a Lights Out.)

i have the shock sanded at 1000 with aggressive drilling. Could make it higher grit, but i thought the nano and fusion would be too big of a gap so I kept it up there.

didnt actually consider the ride

I would suggest the Ride as well. The lanes I bowl on are dry 80% of the time and the ride is very controllable in these conditions. It actually hooks more than I thought it would but guys hook house balls across the lanes where I bowl. The ball hits the pins like a much higher performance ball. It seems to fit what your looking for from what I can see.

i havent seen any actually thrown but the columbia deep freeze is in the same slot in the columbia line as the ride is in the storm line. may be something to think about

I'd suggest the Ride as well.  It meets all three of my requirements for a great light oil / short oil ball:  it gets through burnt heads well, makes a nice controlled move, and still hits with power.  Tropical Breeze is similar but I'm not sold on the hitting power of the TB - it seems to need a perfect roll in order to be effective.

I've drilled a few Columbia Freeze before for other people (not the Deep Freeze to be fair) and they need more head oil than the Ride.

One more vote for the Ride.  I have only hit one condition where I got over under with the ball.  It has allowed me to play much straighter on the wet dry house shots than any other ball in my bag.   One caveat.  This ball wants to roll.  I have a feeling that even heavy handed guys with too much side roll might be disappointed with the hit if they have to play out angle.  Think urethane back end reaction look, but with more energy at the pocket

For anyone having thrown both: How does the Ride compare to the Strike King?
