I really want to buy a Storm ball but I just can't pull the trigger. What concerns me is that when I have to resurface, I won't be able to get back the oob reaction. I heard its extremely hard to that with Storm stuff. I was wondering if anybody takes a 2000 or even a 4000 abralon pad to tha ball before using it?

try a hyroad they take change great , got one a 2000 and moonshine the other at 4000 and roll great

I won't buy anything from Storm ever again because of the exact reason your concerned about. I had a Shift, and a TRP, loved both of them until I had to resurface. I could never get the same reaction. I took both balls to three different shops in my area and no one could help me. I'm sure theres someone on here who can help but its too much work for me. Good luck...

I've always found that storm stuff is very easy to work the surface on and quite easy to get back to box....I've never had any problems with their stuff.

I've never had issues replicating factory finishes ever. I experiment with finishes quite often as well, I currently have a few Storm balls, they all are holding up well and doing good for me, I don't recommend them really over anything else because every company makes good equipment but I find the storm stuff working for me of late.

I always had trouble getting it to react the same after I had to re-touch the surface, that is why I quit throwing Storm. I recently decided i had to try a Rapid Fire, which is starting to lose its reaction. I am going to re-touch the surface soon using information in this thread..

I will let you know how it comes out if you want, if you can give me a few days as I won't bowl in league again until Tuesday.

I like Storm because you can play w/the covers if you want/have too. Should be no reason you can't at least get close to the surface you want it back to....And depending on what ball your looking at, the solid reactives & pearls I would think to be relatively easy to get back to box. The hybrids & pearl/parts may be harder.
With that said, I've taken my Shift down for an oil bath & then used step 2 to get it pretty close. I love my Shift. It's between that & the Virtual as to my 2 favorite balls. I have my Virtual at a used 2000 ab pad, played a couple games & it got real filthy from the ball return. Cleaned w/ a cleaner lightly applied by a green scotch brite & rinsed w/damp cloth. I was killing w/it last night in league until mid 3rd game. Brought out the Shift & "yahtzeed" & then a 5 count (
) last ball for a 250.
But if that's why you don't want to buy a Storm ball, then don't. More for us that like them.

the easy answer would be to buy the ball and have the cover adjusted before you throw it.sounds silly but since that's the only reason you won't buy a storm I think that will work out for you.

The harder I try the harder they fall

This is a pretty good idea. If nothing else, Storm's polished equipment comes EXTREMELY shiny out of the box which can make it too skid/snap. I do not usually like Storm's polished equipment out of the box, I prefer to have a less polished finish for a little smoother, earlier reaction. Therefore, this works out fine for me -- I just adjust the cover down to preference. And if you do like the highly-polished OOB finish, hit the ball with 600 grit sandpaper or Scotchbright or possibly 1000 abralon then shine it with Reacta Shine or Storm Step #2 polishing compound.
Also, Storm equipment that comes dull out of the box is very easy to recreate obviously, they just sand it with Abralon, nothing fancy there.

Get you a T-Road Solid(1000 grit abralon) and a Street Rod Solid(put the SRS at 4000 grit abralon) and have at it.

I don't think adjusting the finish of a Storm ball is any different then any other brand. Just have to know what you're doing. All mine respond great to dull finishes and different levels of polish. No worries.

I agree 100%. It makes absolutely no difference what manufacturer it is. You have to have the rights tools and the knowledge to get the job done..
I have had no problems returning Storm stuff back to OOB with my spinner..
On a side note, the Storm Surface Factory is also a great way to return a ball to the factory surface.. My pro shop guy just got one and its awesome..
Storm/RG are making some of the best stuff on the market right now.. Just look what's being thrown by the guys making TV most Sunday's and they have 9 tour titles so far in the 08-09 season..

I will adjust the cover prior to even drilling the ball. Even if the cover is 4000 OOB. I'll hit it with 4000 to cut the cover. That way I know I can always duplicate the starting surface .

Clay,
how would you like to cut down the number of 10pins left per night???? Thats what happend to me when i switched to storm.. My # of ten pins left per night went down by atleast 30% and its been this way since 97? Even now, I might leave 1 or 2 tenpins per night, maybe 3 or 4 if i am throwing the ball bad...
If anything, my # of solid 9pins went up, but that was because I always threw a stong ball with alot of revs, but i would rather shoot at 9pins than 10pins.
As for changing the coverstock, I've never had a problem with changing the coverstock and bringing it back to OOB. It might not be exactly the same, but the reaction is still very similar.
Generally for me, thats one of the first things i do with a ball after a game or two of practice with said ball, if i dont like the reaction, i'll either polish it up or give it some surface. I've only had a couple storm balls that i didnt change the surface on, and one was the X-factors, OG, and Reloaded, and the Power Charge Pearl, and Virtual Gravity. All the others i've changed up the coverstock a bit.

I have to concur, the cover stock on the vertigo was one of the easiest coverstocks to polish up. Like what a few others have said, it is using the right polish and having the right knowledge on what you are doing
