crack in weight hole
« on: November 18, 2010, 02:19:05 PM »
ok, so i was cleaning my bowling balls tonight after league and grabbed my Reign of Fire and noticed a nice Crack forming around the weight hole in the ball...  Now I've only used said ball for maybe 2 or 3 games this season... but used it alot last season after i bought it...

I'll probably bring the ball to my pro-shop guy and show him, but idk if he should get ahold of storm or should I ?? or is it something he needs to contact his ball distributor with.....  or if there is anything he can even do... i mean i dont want to be bowling and have it split into a few peices or anything.

Can you post a picture of the crack so we can see it? Your proshop guy might be able to fix it?

I'd take it back to the pro shop. The hole was beveled well.  I worked in a pro shop, and that is something that can be fixed but shouldn't have to be...they will more than likely replace it....

That is weird why that cracked even with the proper amount of bevel...hmm..

Like what raven said, take it back and see if they will replace it.

I am speaking from a pro shop perspective, NOT FOR STORM, but I don't think there is anything wrong with the ball itself. That could have happened many of ways, a pin just caught it the wrong way, machine issues, ball returns, etc.. I would however, take it to your local prop shop, and have them fix it ASAP. The longer you let it go, the worse it can become. It is an easy fix, the pro shop just needs the ball for a couple of days.

If the ball is over uno years then you are SOL unless you contact storm directly.

xfactor i believe it was drilled zero-zero but i'm not sure..

I brought it in to my pro-shop guy and as he told me, what he does is drill out the hole bigger and do a plug and re-drill on the whole..

which was fine with me, it's not like i've been using the ball alot this year cuz of our lack of oil lol...

But my pro-shop guy also said, alot of the companys are cutting corners on quality and lean alot more towards quantity.  as he also said, what companies are now doing, so they can pump out 1000's of balls instead of hundreds is instead of letting them cure for the X amount of hours needed is they put them into a huge room with a bunch of fans and cut the time in half and call it good...

IDK how much that is true, but it wouldnt surprise me either... even one of my bowling teammates said, all of his storm stuff is now starting to crack around the fingers n stuff....

I mean for me this is a first for me, so idk what to think.... hopefully its just a weird happening...

but on the plus side lol,,,,, i did have him order me up a Theory lol.....

I'd worry less about what the company does for "quality" than what your driller does, especially if, as your friend said, many of his ball are starting to crack. There are too many small factors involved with drilling that can have bad results in your ball.

It's good that he bevels all the holes drilled, as that is one.
Another is using drill bits that are not sharp.
Drill too fast can also result in cracks.
Drilling ball that have not stabilized in temperature or humidity. If you bring in a ball that was in the extreme cold or extreme heat in your trunk and he drills it immediately, it could be bad. After all the coverstock, the filler and the core are made of different materials that expand and contrat at different rates.
Using too much glue is another.

These are all small things but they can all have an effect. If someone gets a little careless or a little lazy or is just preoccupied while drilling, it can have more effect than what the manufacturer does. For the most part they are not goign to change their processes if it affects the longevity of their balls (except for oil absorption, of course ).
