Title: Did I get a junk Storm Fast?
Post by: joblo1978 on October 20, 2009, 04:02:10 PM
I ordered a Storm Fast for my girlfriend for christmas, 13 lb.

This may be a silly question to some, but the distance between the pin and CG is only a 1-1.5 inches.  Should I return this ball or is normal for a ball of this weight.  I saw some other Storm Fast's that did not CG's that close to the pin, not sure on their weights though.

I agree with Mr Bowling 846. Pin that close to the CG is okay and will not cause a problem for your g/f.

Unless you specified a specific pin distance and top weight for a certain pattern you were wanting.

Other wise you have a lot of options for that ball to roll great.

Since it's for his g/f I don't think it was bought for any special lane condition, just for his girl to have something new and "pretty" smelling. Girl's love anything that smell pretty or look cute.....

On top of everything else, a 13 lb ball is likely to have a different shaped core, from the one used in 14 - 16 lb balls. So the ball reaction can be quite different.

FYI The 16 lb. one, the RG is 2.53" and the Differential is .040".
For the 13 lb. one, the RG is 2.59" but the differential remains a quite good .039".
So while the RG will make it go longer than the 16 lb., the 13 lb. one has the potential to flare as much as the 16 lb. one, depending on the bowler's rev rate. The Storm website does not show the shape of the 13 lb core. So maybe if you're lucky, it is the same.

By the way as we are speaking of 13lbs balls...
What would you recommend for a girl if an Uprising Drilled Pin Under Ring Finger is not reacting enough on oilier conditions? She had a Brunswick Wizard drilled strong, but wasn't reacting great. I was thinking of something that has more backend turn built in to help her, but likes oil as well.

Opinions?

I looked into it a little after posting the thread.  Seems that with newer and newer releases CG placement is less and less important.  You just let it go where it falls based on manufacturing differences.  If a void hole is necessary the driller can just adjust from there.

I see her most likely just going for a label drilling on this one.  She doesn't have a PAP yet.

This ball is ok depending on how the person throws.  Shorter pins help get a ball into a earlier roll, longer pins are normally for more length.  Usually you have to go to 14lb or above to get a dynamic core as 13lb and under are usually softball cores.

That should work perfectly fine, as a matter of fact, if you g/f throws the ball straight or is a stroker (down and in with a little hook) this will be a benefit because it'll get into a roll quicker and will be easier to control.

Sure do but it's probably not very consistant yet because the release might not be the same on every shot.

Lighter weight balls usually come with shorter pins. Because the cores are lighter, it's harder to make longer pin outs. Your ball is just fine and I'm sure your girlfriend will love it. =:^D

My how things have changed!

Yes, the ball is perfectly fine, and should make a very fine choice on your part.

Things have changed a lot though. I remember when balls with pins out more than 1/2 inch were considered production errors and sold as blems ( late 1980's-early1990's ).  Once bought a Red HAMMER with a 2 1/2 inch pin out for 1/2 price because they marked it as a BLEM. ( Wish I  still had it )
