Sure Fire update
« on: November 27, 2007, 04:51:14 PM »
Leaugue tonight the lanes were heavily oiled. They even put some on the approach, lol! Threw a couple of "regular" shots at 18 mph and the Sure Fire( pin next to ring finger) acted like a plastic ball.

Hit it quickly with a green Scotch pad( brought it down to est. 1500 grit), slowed down the ball to about 13 mph and got a decent 202 with it. Carry was good.

Second game switched to the Blue Vibe( pin above ring finger) and found that it was about a board stronger than the Sure Fire. It also seemed to hit harder and send more messengers. Got a 201 with it. The 14# Blue Vibe has a slightly stronger core: 0.045 vs 0.042 RG diff.

I can't understand it. I can almost "feel" that the Sure Fire has a softer coverstock. It even "sounds" like that when it hits the pins. Yet it does not move much on oil: about the same as the Blue Vibe. Not that it's a bad ball, just definately not what I intended to get: a ball I can play my "A" game on heavier patterns. I guess it'll be Ok if you have a slow speed and lots of revs.

As a last resort I have taken the surface down to 800 grit. But the next league night will be in 2 weeks due to my teammates' vacation.........And then we may only get medium oil.......At least I'll still be able to compare it again with the Blue Vibe. Until then, good bowling!

That is the exact opposite of mine.  My Sure Fire handles more oil and goes through the pins way harder then my Blue Vibe ever did.

Are the layouts the same?

I didn't think Sure Fire was intended to be a heavy oil ball.  I thought it was meant for medium.  Maybe your pin is set for hook but what about MB & CG combined w/your axis tilt & line you're playing?

What I am seeing with the Sure Fire is a controllable, somewhat versatile ball for medium condtions. I would think with the coverstock being a hybrid solid/pearl, that slick lane conditions are going to be the one extreme that the ball is not going to be very good on.

If your looking for control on medium lane conditions, this is the ball. For oil you might want to look at a little stronger coverstock like the Special Agent or Attitude Shift. Even a T-Road solid would be more suited for oil than the Sure Fire.

As I stated: the Sure Fire has more "aggressive" drilling( pin next to ring finger) than the Blue Vibe.

I have to admit that I over worried about burning up and thus chose the Sure Fire over T-Road solid. I'll prob go for a flare increasing hole......

This might give you some more midlane, but it won't be as dramatic as a more aggressive coverstock. On longer or higher volume lane conditions, creating more friction to the surface is going to let you get away with more mistakes. Surface on the ball and stronger/aggressive coverstock is the way to create that. Release and reduction of ball speed can also help out, but surface is the easiest way to generate more friction.

If you are looking for a ball to play your A game with in heavy oil, the T-road solid would be a great choice.  The Sure Fire is a great ball, but to me it's more for the medium patterns.

Kind of got lucky today: had between medium and heavy oil during practice. The Sure Fire at about 800 is finally "overall" stronger than the Blue Vibe at 1200; but only by about 2 boards.

It seemed to grip the lane better and the carry was a little better than the Blue Vibe. But possibly due to the drilling the Blue Vibe had a little stronger finish and seemed to hit a little harder. All in all, still pretty similar.

As most other people experienced: the Blue Vibe is stronger than advertised. I also notice a little amount of "particles" like material in the coverstock, like some others reported.
