Title: Dry lane ball
Post by: thewhiz on September 27, 2016, 06:58:22 AM
I may have asked this question before but can't find it.  What storm or roto grip ball would be comparable to a green motive ascent?  Thought maybe a hustle SAY.  But I am not sure.

The Loco Pearl, Scream, or maybe JoyRide would be closest

I'd suggest the Tropical Storm Hybrid or the Joy Ride (drilled weakly).

The Green/Purple and the Red/Black were the weaker of the Ascents. The Ocean Blue and the Pink/Green used a much stronger cover. I think they'd be equivalent to the LOco Pearl.

I have a Hustle Pro drilled up as my dry lane ball. I love it's smooth motion and how it never over reacts. For an entry level ball it hits hard and you can't beat the price on it! The Say is a little snappier as it has 2 parts pearl to one part solid.

I use a path rising with the cover at 3000 plus polish

Would a urethane pitch black break less than that green motive ascent?

Different motion of urethane vs weak reactive

It probably handles more oil than the Gr/PU Ascent, but is much smoother in its ball reaction over the length of the lane.

One of my teammates has the green and pink Ascent and the Pitch Black. The latter has quite a different motion but handles somewhat less oil, although the Motiv actually moves a lot for him so his case might be an outlier.

Just a side note: The Green/Pink Ascent uses a much stronger coverstock than the older Green/Purple Ascent and is almost 1/2 to a full step stronger.

I would go Rebel Tank for the real burn. The Pearl won't cause it to puke early but you'll still get decent carry.

Most bowlers will have success using urethane on short patterns instead of burned up patterns.  The natural tendency of urethane to hook early doesn't match the conditions faced after everyone has destroyed the heads with hook monsters.

Apparently the pattern we were on last night was freshly oiled.  With what I don't know.  How would a tropical breeze compare to urethane?

I LOVED my Tropical Breeze pearl as a spare ball and burn piece. I knocked the shine off with 500 abralon and put it pin down. For me, the ball ignored scorched heads, grabbed in the mids a bit and offered a smooth, rolly movement all the way down. It was one of the best dry-lane reactions I've had in years. I could throw that ball outside of 5 and just strike all day long. If I got the ball out quick, it reacted to the friction without snapping. If I tugged it a bit, it held pocket all day long; it was just a matter of carry. Long story short, I think a Tropical Breeze can be an amazing ball for shorter/dryer patterns.
