If you paid attention during the telecast and numerous times its been mentioned with Fagans release his Axis point is only a little more than 3 inches over so the drilling wasn't as weak as it appeared to be.

Where was the pin located?  I only got to watch the final match.  Have to remember that Fagans PAP is around 3 1/2.  So, if the pin was say slightly to the left of the middle finger, it still makes the pin around 5 1/2 from his PAP.  Once you get to around 6 inches or more from PAP, you start risking reverse flare.

The pin was about 1 1/2-2" up from his middle finger and 1/2-1" left.

Thanks man.  Then the pin to PAP distance was around 5 1/2 - 5 3/4 as I thought.

It definitely was an Agent that Fagan was throwing.  I thought that looked like a really weak layout, but if Fagan's PAP is only 3.5 over, than I understand.

Please don't drill a ball based on what the pros do! Your game isn't like theres and you'll only end up being dissapointed.

Drill your stuff based on your game and the reaction your looking for.

They only uses those drills on the cheeta pattern. And then theres Smith and TJ....

You SHOULD pay attention to what drillings the pros use, but you should not assume you'd get the same reaction.  They often use low flare drillings which are not necessary for most bowlers on THS, but I find that they are great on flatter patterns.

Right.  They aren't picking the layouts out of a hat or anything.  If he's using a longer pin-to-PAP distance, it's for a reason.  There's a slim, outside chance that if you have similar goals, that maybe the way they achieve their goals is worth looking into.  Will you be able to use a 6x5 drill like Pro X?  Maybe not.  Should you put the pin over your fingers with the CG in X location?  Who knows.  But if they're using those drills to get a particular reaction, maybe something similar could help you get a similar reaction.  Low-flare drills on flatter patterns for playing a line like you like?  Maybe, just maybe, a lower-flare drill would work for you.  Maybe 5" instead of 6", but there's a method to their madness and we can learn a lot from them.

I bowl on PBA patterns every week and I use 5-1/2" to 6" PAP to pin distance almost exclusive.  I find that high-flare drillings that work wonderfully on THS are too over/under on sport patterns, resulting on splits.  A low-flare, smooth, arcing drilling works as I usually play straight down and in on these patterns as opposed to swinging the ball on THS.  Furthermore, pin distances from PAP of 5" are becoming more popular even on THS.  Between a high rev release and the super low rg, high-flaring core, the usual 3-3/8" drilling is not the best choice anymore.  The result of this combination is over-flaring, which results in rolling over previous flares, thus, simulating carrydown.  In this case, the 5" pin to PAP will result in more overall hook.  All this needs to be considered when selecting a drilling.  Not everyone can go into the shop and say "drill this like (insert pro here)'s ball"  Most ball drillers will be happy to entertain these ideas, but should ultimately let the customer know whether it suits their game or not.
