R2S, R3S, and REX
« on: October 05, 2022, 01:08:58 PM »
I was just thinking about this.  Could REX replace the R2S moving forward as the main coverstock used on new releases?  In the current lineup; REX is now on 3 balls (Night Road, Dark Code, and Infinite Physix), and the Fate will make 4.  However, I wonder why R3S is not used more.  I know it was used on the Spectre and wonder if that cover will be used again.  I may ask Beef and Barnzy this same question on their next show to see if they know anything.

So I asked this question on Beef and Barnzy today and they said it could be possible that REX takes the place of R2S for future releases as we are seeing it more but could not answer as to why R3S isnt used more often and that would be for the higher ups to answer.

Storm currently lists ReX as their 3rd strongest cover behind NeX and TractionX7.

In that sense alone, I don't see ReX replacing R2S.

I'm still not 100% sure on ReX. Sometimes it wants to be strong and early, sometimes it wants to boom a little more on the back.

Personally I'd like to see the TractionX7 (Parallax Effect) used on another core but I don't know if they ever will

R3S had some good releases but I don't think it's marketable in the same sense as NeX or ReX.
The Nova has R2X hybrid and that cover is amazing but it's not like the cover gets real attention unless it's a brand new cover with a new acronym lol

This is why I would probably disagree.  Have to remember that R2S was used on everything from mid-performance to high.  R2S is pretty old now and time that something came along to replace it.  I could see R2S trickle down to the lower performance levels like the Electrify that is still using R1S.  Since REX has R2S in it; I could see it ultimately replace R2S on mid to higher end releases and it has already started with 3 current balls having the cover and a 4th about to be released.

At some point R2S' lifespan is going to end and there has to be something in line to take its place.  Storm does have R3S and even R4S but those covers are not used much at all.  When I mentioned it on their show; Stu was emphatically nodding yes while Chris was saying that REX very well could be the next in line as the cover that takes on what the R2S has brought to Storm's lines of balls.

R2S isn't ending any time soon. So many people bowl on high friction conditions and it's a great option for later in blocks in tournaments.

Yes, R2S used to be their top cover. In today's game, it's a medium strength cover. The only "high-end" balls it's been used on in recent years is the Code series and Astro Physix, those were all great on medium conditions and transition.

R2X is, by far, my favorite coverstock ever. It's like the new REX, but with like 5% earlier read, making it a bit more predictable. I'd love to know if R2X is known as something else these days.

I'm an R2X guy myself. Storms best batch of balls were out during that era...

I'm still surprised we've never seen the Velocity core paired with R2X Pearl.
