Just wondering what your experiences are with differences in manufactured pin position? That is ordering balls witn 1-2, 3-4, greater than 4, etc.

How much of an effect does this have? Isn't the majority of the effect based on pin position relative to grip?

The pin's position in relation to your PAP (positive axis point) is much more important than the pin to CG distance. Drilled the same, a 1-2" pin will hook a bit earlier and arc the most, 2-3" will give average length and backend, and a 3-4" will get the most length and (probably) backend. The ball has to be drilled for your game or what you order is moot. If you throw 20 MPH with 150 rpm, you don't want a 4" pin.
