"Benchmark" ball suggestions for a reformed cranker
« on: April 18, 2013, 12:26:08 PM »
Greetings all!  I am new to the board but have spent a lot of time over the past two weeks or so going through a slew of posts.  I am impressed and humbled at the accumulated knowledge and expertise of all you fine folks.  I would like to thank you in advance for your help, advice and friendship.

I would like some advice/input on a “benchmark” ball.

So I fit into that “coming back to the sport after a long time away” syndrome.  Through the hard-won wisdom of the years, I have decided to dedicate the effort to convert to a more of a “tweener/power tweener” from a cranker.  I do this to capitalize on consistency and accuracy, as well as maximize economy of effort.  These things were issues “back in the day”.  In this mode, I throw fairly comfortably from just about any line, am able to tweak and control ball-speed between, say 15 to 17, cant give you pap info at the moment but hope to soon.

I will be bopping around between three local houses that are all sporting relatively new (synthetic) lanes frosted with pretty typical house oil.  I will be staying within local leagues and not planning on venturing into tournaments for the foreseeable future.

My last new ball was a Storm Flash Force around 2004ish.  This ball made me fairly partial to Storm.  One of my other favorite balls is an old Roto Star from the 80s, so I am also on-board with Roto Grip equipment.

My thinking is that I should be looking for something in the mid-line as I am not asking the ball to eat that much and will not be sending it through too much soup.  Perhaps even looking for something somewhat older rather than the current flavor of the month, i.e. Hyroad or Marvel Pearl?  Does this sound viable or does anyone have any other views on this?

**UPDATE

So the plot thickens..and gets more tricky.

Working with a local Pro Shop guy, I found that the lane conditions are dramatically different in one of the houses.  Turns out when they renovated, they replaced with new, hybrid wooden lanes and not synthetics.

I compared the old Flood Force to a Manic last night and found that they are fairly compareable.  This ball may be workable at this house, or at least I am going to try to make it workable.  The problem becomes the other houses where I am flirting with the idea of two seperate semi-competitive leagues.

My local guy worked with me a bit and watched me throw.  We talked about my situation and he feels that for those two houses (which he also throws at), I need more ball than what I was looking at.  He feels that for me to get what I am looking for out of the ball, I should be looking along the lines of a Lucid/Sync/IQTP.  I dont feel that he is just throwing this recommendation to sell the premium balls at mark up, but I am wondering about perhaps looking at the used market here locally.

Well he is going to know more than we do.  You should take his word before you take ours unless he gives you a reason not to trust his judgment.

The fact that the pro shop guy took time to watch your game is a good thing.  That's a sign of a good shop owner.

Thanks again for all the responses.  I began the process with this local Pro SHop guy by looking for a bracket of balls, largely reflective of a lot of the input here.  I was, at first, a little suprised and somewhat dubious of the suggestion of the stronger ball.  But after talking and working through some variables, his advise did make sense and, I feel, on target.

Doing some more research and then a night or two of watching what people are throwing at those houses before making up my mind.  Will update with further recommendations as they come.

Defiant soul. Its made by roto grip and i think it has worked better for the vast majority. Its strong in the midlane and backend, decent length, and made for medium heavy to heavy oil patterns. Or look at y he disturbed because it reads earlier, smooth roll and is also made for medium heavy to heavy oil patterns. What motion are you looking for?

Sorry tommy i meant to say strong and smooth. I do realize the r2s is significantly stronger but i feel that the reactor hybrid will provide him with the best roll.

The frantic or freakin frantic may be a good option.  I would also suggest looking at the Defiant Edge.

I don't think anybody would ever not recommend a Hyroad.  The Roto Berserk is also a pretty good option.

I would not suggest the Hy-Road to anyone.  I had one, and personally, I felt the cover died early, and the ball was very touchy for me.  Anything slightly too fast, the ball would struggle to get to the pocket, slightly light, the ball would be all nose.

** Update

Everyones input is very much appreciated!!  My research and trials with everyones advise in mind led me to the Defiant Soul.  Interestingly, it matches up extremely well at one of the houses in particular and I saw at least 60% usage during one league (with everyone throwing with tweener lines/action throwing one for at least the first two games).

I am having it drilled tonight.  I am looking forward to dialing in the layout with my local Pro Shop and then going to work.

If you still need to fill a gap, the Tropical Heat Hybrid (black and silver) is a must have. I have sold my vivid and hyroad. The t heat has a permanent place in the bag. It is cleaner through the front than my IQ Tour and more angular in the back.

Defiant Soul may be the best ball on the market right now. I wouldn't worry too much about the shop guy upselling you....honestly the margins are not much different for us from tier to tier.

Compliment that with a Wrecker and you will have a great, and prett inexpensive, 1-2 punch for most conditions. The Wrecker hooks a ton for an entry level ball so from there you will probably only be looking for a step down to fill the low end gap.

Good luck.
