Hot Rod vs. Big Hit
« on: May 21, 2003, 04:12:06 AM »
Hi a friend of mine was wondering which would be a better ball for him.  a big hit or a hot rod.  he rolls the ball probably 16-17 mph.  low to medium revs.  usually likes to play up the 10 board.  kinda between a stroker and a tweener.  he currently has a Columbia WOW, Columbia messenger BRT, columbia scout/R, Shock Trauma, and a 2001 blue hammer.

Any ideas???

What is he looking for the ball to do?
The Big HIt is not a ball that is normally going to hook much, but that depends on the lane conditions. THe HOt ROd will hook more, but again how much depends on the conditions.

well im kinda confused on what he wants it to do too. lol. but from what he tells me im guessing that he wants a pretty good skid snap.  he wants it for drier lanes and he wants it to skid thru the heads and then snap in the back.  the way he rolls it im notreally sure if he can do it.  but he wants to try.  all of his equipment is drilled to roll early right now so ya.  I was going to suggest to him the Wild from columbia but he is getting the ball for free and it has to be one of those 2.

In my opinion the Scout/R, which you say he has, and the Big Hit, are kissing cousins. They are balls with a medium high RG cores, for length, polished pearl coverstocks, also for length, and cores with a high RG differential flip blocks off a basic pancake block for a lot of backend on a dry condition. These two balls, if drilled relatively closely, should be very similar in overall ball reaction. Even with different drillings they will not have ahuge difference in overall oil handling and hook. The Wild is a slight variation on the Scout/R, more made for marketing value.

What is the Messenger BRT that you say he has?
There's Messenger Black/Gold pearl, a Messenger Blue/Silver/Pink pearl, and a Wicked BRT.

Unless you know what he wants, you and we can't really help him.

Neither ball will snap in the back like he wants.  He has  a comparable ball to the hit with the scout,  with that said, he should take the better ball, the Hot Rod.

#2 son has his Hot Rod & new Eraser Particle drilled just about the same. As a matter of fact his Boost & Blaze are also real close. The Hot rod will turn the corner "BIG " time when finds the dry. The Eraser is no slouch either. Both will snap real nice with fresh backends. All 4 are real tough to beat for the price & the job they do. Darn hard to justify those high dollar balls for the performance you get out of this group.
