Title: Hy-Road Changed?
Post by: 2handedrook12 on May 18, 2015, 12:14:23 AM
I've heard from many people that the original Hy-Road is different from the one's made in 09. Any thoughts?

Basically, no, but keep in mind that Storm's coverstocks may keep the same name, but they are constantly changing to keep up with the conditions. So the formula for the 2009 R2S may differ slightly from the 2015 R2S formula.

I think so yes.  There's a reason why all of the pros horde 09-10 hyroads in their garage.

I wouldn't be surprised if ANY of the big name pros use any NEw hyroads..

On storms exclusive site, they have the Code Purple listed as RS2 Gen4.

I wondered this too since I had a 2009 Hyroad and a 2013 Hyroad, which look and smell different from a 2014 and 2015 Hyroads I purchased. The '09 and '13 had the boysenberry smell that I was not a huge fan of (I made a post several months ago that the scent made me nauseous and I ended up not using the Hyroad because of it); the '14 and '15 Hyroad has a punchier berry smell which I can much better tolerate. Also, the '14 and '15 I can see much more shades of pearlized/lighter blue colors whereas the '09 and '13 Hyroads I had were dark blue and almost all black.

With all that said, I did not see a big difference in reaction since I had the '09, '13, and '15 Hyroads with the exact same layout.

seeing as modern bowling balls dont stay out for as long as the hyroad has, it makes sense that they would update the cover for evolving lane oils. much like cars are updated with more technology and keep the same name. and i have never thrown a hyroad but from what ive seen from other people the updated balls are just as good as the originals. i personally dont see a huge difference in reaction in terms of volume handling ability or shape. the hyroad is still just awesome

This post just made my day...

I was going to purchase the hyroad since I up'd in ball weight over a year ago. but, my gut has been telling me not to do so the past year. I had a feeling the cover has been tweaked from the hyroads I've own 6 years ago. I was even online this morning still thinking of getting the hyroad, but I backed off. Then i read this post lo

It's a mental thing - my reason for not purchasing the newer hyroads.

There ain't nothin' wrong with the new HyRoads.  If there is a difference in the new ones from the balls of 5 years ago then the new ones are the second best ball in the last 5 years.

In all honesty, I love both of mine. I asked this question because people were making it seem like the newer ones are inferior to the originals. The greater difference as far as I know is the night and day core numbers in the 16 pounders. I threw my friends (has a similar PAP) and it was way better of a reaction overall. I have another question with th Road series that I am about to post. Stay tuned!

yeah..... I had two hy-roads which you drilled up for me.....but I think agent "K" did the other.... anyway, I may give it some more thought..it's a great ball for a long time for me. especially on several non THS conditions

The oils used on the lanes today are much different than oils used in 2009. This would cause the biggest difference in ball motion. Just in the Kegel camp, there may or may not have been Navigate, and surely there was no Fire or Ice oil. Prodigy has been around for awhile.
