Anyone still using the Hy-Road
« on: January 29, 2018, 06:59:40 AM »
I’m coming late to the storm party having been initially put off by the IQ Tour Fusion. That ball for me looked great to the pocket but I couldn’t carry. I dabbled with Radical before settling with Motiv. Motiv do smooth reacting solids well at the top of the bag but I struggled with the bottom of the bag until I found the Hustle Ink.

So the Hustle Ink has me thinking that the legend that is the Hy-Road could have a place in my bag and I was wondering if folks still use it and if so, under what conditions and where it sits in their arsenal for them.

As for layout recommendations, does it work better with shorter/longer pin to PAP, that high RG and lower diff for the 14lb has me worried.

Thanks in advance for the advice

Lets put this way I am seriously considering buying a second one just to squirrel away which I never do even though ball is still available.  It is my transition ball and the ball I trust more than just about any other.  When Storm does finally discontinue it they better give decent warning as they are are going to sell a ton of them once word comes down.

Same here. I still have the original version (~2008ish) and have thrown thousands of games with it; still hits like a truck. Use it on ever condition as it is the most predictable ball I've ever thrown. Have a few stored away in case the OG decides to die out. IMO, everyone should at the very least try a Hyroad.

I was way late to the party with the original HyRoad but I have one now.  I picked it up around Christmas and have about 10 or so games on it now.  I just hit the box surface with a 3000 pad (that has 2-3 uses on it) just to knock that shine off and I'm letting it lane shine up some.  Great ball motion so far and is a good step up from my Hectic.

No 2 piece reads the mid lane better (of at least the 6 I own already).  My only knock is with my style I have problems getting it to turn on fresh shot but once I can find some friction its my go to ball.  Have to really screw up to get a nasty split with it with my ball speed.

Been looking at the #'s of the HyRoad, between 16lb vs 15lb there seems to be a big difference in the #'s. 2.52/.058 for the 16lb vs 2.57/.046 for the 15lbs. Will there be a big difference in reaction? I get confused with all the numbers of the core.

The diff goes down to .037 and the RG inscreaes slightly further to 2.58 on the 14lb

To answer your question not as much as one would assume.  I have the Hy-Road hybrid in 15 and the Hy-Road pearl in 16 and the Hy-Road pearl is still significantly weaker and I have not noticed much different in carry between the two.  I recommend not going up to 16 unless you regularly throw 16.

Never owned or threw one until last night. Bought a “used and abused” 2013 model off the used ball rack, had it plugged and redrilled pin up, cg in palm, about a 5X4 with a deep 1/2 inch weighthole in the pap.

I’m already thinking about owning a new one. And a pearl too.

On our shot, had to start out a little deeper than I anticipated. Didn’t think it was supposed to be this strong, but hey, it’s a typical house shot.

Feet on 30, target 14th board. Almost instantly, you know. If you’ve ever had “that ball”, then you know what I mean. It doesn’t do anything crazy, it doesn’t do anything spectacular, but what it does, it does it in such a way that you just know what’s coming.

I've owned three,a nano and two hybrids. the hybrids all hooked a bunch on the back where the nano is more mid lane. I polished the nano to see what look it gave me and low and behold it was the hybrid with a different color. all be told I like the nano the best. polished I have the hybrid, light scuff and I have something much stronger. 2000 grit and I have a decent oiler.
The harder I try the harder they fall

Yeah its a heck of a ball.  Its just too bad I have to put so much surface on it to use it on the conditions I see, at least for league.  For most people though its plenty of ball for virtually any THS including even after some transition.  Also the pearl is good but it really needs friction.  You may be able to use it right out of the bag but its almost a dry ball for me.

I use the OG Hyroad and then switch to the Pearl, and the to a Hustle Ink as needed on a mixed league that starts as fresh medium-light at best, over what may have been leftover prom Saturday and Sunday morning youth and open bowlers. Have to start all in the oil, as the second arrow is the line of choice by others using rubber, urethane, and plastic. I keep moving deeper trying not to get the ball out into the fried areas if possible.

On a higher volume, fresh THS condition, the HyRoad comes into play as the lanes transition, it is not the first ball out of the bag for me.
