Title: HyRoad X
Post by: DP3 on October 31, 2018, 07:38:59 AM
I've been bowling since 1998. This is the best ball reaction I've ever seen.

That's all, I don't have much else. Sorry.

This isn't a staffer review. Not enough adjectives.

House shot?  Darn it going to have to get this ball after seeing how much I love R2X on the Marvel Pearl.

I probably won't get one for a while but I definitely will have one of these.

I love my OG HyRoad on higher friction surfaces as well as sport transition......not enough games on the HyRoad Pearl yet to come to any conclusion.

I saw one being used by a bowler I go to tournaments with often. I know his game fairly well. This past weekend we were bowling the CA State Seniors tournament where he used this ball and it was one of the more over/under balls I have ever seen him try to use. He finally put it away and said, "I can't see that ball being much use to me".

He is a very accomplished bowler with a long string of 300/800 series. He averages in the mid to high 220's in three different houses for the past several years. His USBC Open Championships average is 201 and has shot a 300 game and has had 700+ series(multiple times) at the Open. This is just to say, dude isn't your typical house hack and is a legitimate bowler.

Watch the reviews by Luke R. & Tamer bowling on you tube.  Their reviews speak volumes for deciding the performance attributes of the X.

I had one drilled up and this is what I saw out of the box. Granted, I've only used it one game. The ball just went sideways off the friction and did nothing in oil. Our house shot has been a mess this year, at least in my opinion. Crazy back end. There's oil up front, so you do start getting carry down in spots. To make matters worse, they've been tweaking it recently. However, now it's back to what it was - not sure for how long. I thought it was great after one tweak, but people started to bitch about all the oil. Everyone wants big hook.

Anyway, back to the ball... At this point, I'm just going to blame that mirror gloss finish Storm likes to use. It's only been fine for me on a few balls. I'm going to knock the shine off and try it again later this week. However, this could easily be like the Daredevil Danger and Winner, where a lot of other people love(d) them, but they did not suit my game at all.

I always adjust OOB surface before I throw the first shot.  HyRoad at 3000 is good.

It's a high RG ball with some diff so an ultra luster shine on it may be sub-optimal.

I would certainly do the same with the HyRoad X if I had one......anything to keep it from eternal push and ultra quick jerk response off the friction.  Hit it with a 2000 pad.

I've heard 1500 polished is the best! Someone doesn't like it's over under nature??

I didn't have a chance. My PSO finished drilling it right before the end of practice. Ideally, I'd like to get to try it outside of league first at box and then go from there. However, more often than not, he has my new balls ready right before league. It's also just league, so I'm not just going to stash it and try it later. I'll at least give it practice or a game to decide whether to keep using it or not.

Just something else to point out... The differential is not quite as high in 14lbs. It still goes sideways though - at least off the friction. Believe me, the shine is coming off. I still expect it to be snappy though. The Hy-road Pearl was when I took the shine off. Just less snap.

OOB it’s skid jerk, a total nightmare. Break the cover with anything from 2000-4000 pad and it’s the best ball I’ve seen since the Hyroad (had 6 of them).

I’m really diggin mine so far. Only been able to experiment on house patterns but one is old wood and one is AMF syntheticss with a higher volume pattern. When you think you can’t use it anymore, just keep moving deeper and it’ll get it done. Should get to use it on some sport patterns in the coming months. My current expectation is it’ll be a perfect go to when I can’t get my Phaze 2 down the lane anymore.

I think that's actually a good example from what I've seen. R2X fits right under the Phase 2 cover

Sorry slightly off OP topic.. but I do wonder how the PhysiX would play in relation to my Hyroad X and Phaze 2. I played a bit with my PSO’s on a burnt house shot on wood, but the span was a touch long and thumb pitch off. So I couldn’t quite get on it right but it was surprisingly clean.

I have a matte finish iQ Tour solid (R2S)  and that thing can be fast off the dry so I can only imagine what 1500 polished of R2X would do.

Let me expand on my original post.

I took this ball down to 3000 after the first 3 shots with it so it's pretty much the only motion that I "know" from the ball. It has that easy length that the hyroad balls have. Like all legendary balls, the one trait that they have in common is a large window at the breakpoint.

Meaning that the miss area left to right at the 40-45ft mark is larger than any ball I've probably every thrown. Easy house shots magnify that window, but the thing that makes this ball *special* in my eyes is that it gets to that spot down the lane and peels no matter how bad I miss it, or how much I get on it at the bottom.

With most of todays balls, the harder you get on it at the bottom, the faster it stands up and the weaker it finishes. With Hyroad X, I see the opposite, the more you give it at the bottom, the more it gives you downlane. Combine that with being very forgiving left to right and you have a ball that will be one of the best looks in my bag on many different conditions, volumes, and lengths.

For me it's HyRoad up front/Marvel Pearl down lane. A beast of a ball for my game.

Hey good times, almost pissed my pants. LMAO! Great pix. So true. Hate the 1500 grit polish. As doom says. 1500 grit polish is pure evil.

Good stuff. Sounds like what I'm seeing out of mine as well.

Are you still liking the Hustle HYB? Your post about it a while back was one of the things I kept in mind when I got mine. No regrets whatsoever with that one. You have me thinking about the X now.

Yes! Hustle HYB is the first ball out of my bag regardless of the shot. It does have the tendency to get flat downlane and corner in transition. I rarely get to get a full set out of the ball, but when I do it blends the lane super well and it's very predictable. It's one of those balls you can 3/1 all night with and not give up pocket.

My main league bag now looks like: Hyroad X, Hustle HYB, Badger. The badger is super sideways. It's usually all or nothing out of that thing.

Absolutely on point.  I tried mine oob at a tournament and it was pretty awful.  I took the surface to 500/1000/2000/3000 and it’s been pretty good since.  We just changed the oil in our league so I’m gonna have to take the surface down some more to use it on the fresh.
