In bowling jail
« on: October 20, 2015, 06:40:21 PM »
Been a very frustrating start to my season so far. Probably hit the pocket 90% of my shots but not carrying anything. I averaged higher in the 80's with my plastic stuff then I do now. I throw it too straight to move in and when I play out, nothing carries for me. My current arsenal is Crux 1000  Respect OOB  IQ TOUR Polished and Respect Pearl OOB. Looking at either getting a hook monster (Lock) and moving way in or something that goes really straight  (Ride). I hate pounding the pocket night after night and getting crushed. 15.5 mph and a low track. Looking for advice .  Thanks

I am willing to do that but don't know where to start. Hyroad has just been so good for so long. Lots of them at our centers.

Let's start here.  When you play outside, which I'm assuming is your preference, is the outside playing heavier or drier than last year?  Are the lanes playing tighter?

dryer for sure.  i am thinking of something that will let me play out more. Right now unless I throw my super natural my weakest ball would be my polished IQ Tour. I used to love my Tropical Heat Hybrid.

As a low rev/high speed lefty, I often find myself playing in the dry part of the lane.  And last year, the lanes at my house were very toasty on the outside - almost too toasty.  I found 2 ways to combat it without having to evacuate the area: a pin down UpRoar and a pin up 400A.

Given my lack of rev rate, the pin-down (large VAL angle) UpRoar just loped down lane.  It was the quintessential control ball but with lots of length without a violent back end.  It was a perfect step down from the IQ Tour Solid in terms of ball motion.  The pin up (small VAL angle) 400A was my go to ball for most of the year.  It went very long and snapped hard at the break point.  It created the entry angle needed to kick out corner pins.

Your initial assessment was to get a hook monster or something super weak.  I am not sure you need to go with either.  I think going with either may leave you with the same kind of carry you're already seeing.  What kind of ball motion do you prefer?  Arching or skid/flip?  As Avabob said, "The key to carry isn't more hook, but rather getting you ball to store the revs you do get further down the lane."  Perhaps you need more of a skid/flip ball motion.  Without seeing you bowl its all speculation.

Sometimes you just have too much ball. I liked the UpRoar and Wipe Out. They allowed my ball to go through the pins the right way more times than not. You may need to use a weight hole 2 inches down the VAL to get it to flare properly.
