First time user could use some advice
« on: December 22, 2009, 10:52:03 PM »
I'm looking to replace my Storm xxxfactor. witch Storm ball would be the closest to this ball. I was thinking of the Hi-road. I would appreciate any help you could give me. Thanks

'What current ball do I replace my 4-8 year old ball' is a common question on these forums so I'd assume you'd think there is a standard answer.  Unfortunately it is not a simple response since cover stock technology is more aggressive today than the Monsoon Pearl on your XXX Factor so there really isn't a simple way to respond.

Usually I would recommend you replace asymmetric balls with asymmetric balls to get a similar roll shape and just deal with the difference in covers.  If you want to go down that path I'd get a Gravity Shift (if you can find one - they are a few months out of manufacture) or a Roto Grip Cell Pearl.  The covers on both of these balls have more friction than your XXX Factor but the cores will give you a similar roll.

If you are really asking the age old 'which ball will handle similar amount of oil / hook' I would say that all of the Storm R2S/R2X balls are stronger overall, so why not get the one with the weakest core the Fast?  On a fresh house shot a Fast will have a different roll shape than a XXX but the R2S Pearl cover will provide more friction.  It will probably be the closest in overall board coverage.

Sorry for the long post, but in summary I'd get a Cell Pearl and deal with the stronger cover - but if you really want to do the board covering replacement look at the Fast.

Another ball you may want to look into is a Fast Pearl.  The XXX Factor is old by todays standards and high end from 5 years ago is now mid performance today.  I believe a layout where you get the weight hole down will give you a look more similar than trying to replace a high end ball of years ago with another high end ball that will be stronger overall.

Luster Kings won't "hurt" the surface, but think of a bowling ball coverstock like your skin...the wax will clog the pores and make the ball hook less.  I would purchase a polish from your pro-shop for basic maintenance or give them the ball every so often to keep the surface fresh.
