Title: IQ Tour Nano OOB vs Rocketship OOB
Post by: ryguy119 on September 21, 2016, 07:29:10 AM
I was thinking about replacing my IQ Tour Nano with the new Rocketship. I was wondering if anybody has thrown these balls side by side. The Tour Nano is a nice step up from my IQ Tour and a decent step down from my Hyper Cell Skid. Ball is just getting old. Probably over 150 games on ball. I found a new IQ Tour Nano on ebay but it is pricey. I can buy the new Rocketship at about 1/2 the cost. Looks really close by what I can tell about the reaction of the 2 balls. I am hoping someone out there has thrown them side by side. Thank you.

I believe the Rocket Ship will be closer to your IQ Tour than to the Nano.  Stronger core but a decent step down in cover strength (R2S versus Nano).  The Rocket Ship is just a continuation of the R2S line that had the HyRoad Solid, Victory Road Solid and the T-Road Solid.

You're probably better off drilling the Phaze II with a P1 and adjusting surface if needed than going with the Rocket Ship.

Or better yet, drill the Phaze II and wait to add a hole after adjusting surface.  I am a big proponent of adding balance holes after other options are exhausted.

Rocketship and some surface.....the OB is 3000 sheen, basically 1500 polished and lighly scuffed with a 3000 pad....try 500/3000

I tend to agree with this approach. I have the Rockership and IQ Tour, and they're really not that close in reaction. I don't have the IQ Nano, but I've seen plenty in action. The Rocketship with some surface will get you close.

I would be afraid putting enough surface on the Rocket Ship to reach the strength of the Nano would make it dramatically different shapewise than the Nano.  My experience with the Nano was it had some push in it and not too early.

You could be right on Rocketship surface. I haven't touched the cover in mine, so I don't know how far it could be effectively taken down. A straight 2000 shouldn't be too much, but still, that's a lot more than what it comes OOB.

I'm a big fan of the IQs. I have the other three and still use them. But I couldn't pull the trigger on the Nano. With the Marvel S cover but a weaker core, the Nano never impressed me. I didn't see it as a real oiler, and the smooth reaction with iffy backend limited it's usefulness, at least from what I could see.

As with all things bowling, it all depends on the conditions you encounter.

I agree. The Rocket Ship is a great ball, but I don't feel it can replace the IQ Tour Nano. Best of luck in what ever route you decide to go towards. Hope to hear some feedback.

The IQ Nano is going to be a difficult ball to replicate with most offerings currently available. But the performance specs on the Rocket Ship and IQ Nano are remarkably similar. BJI has the length and breakpoint shapes of the two balls almost identical. That's not surprising because they're both considered to be control balls. Additionally, the BJI overall hook rating of the Rocket Ship is only slightly below that of the IQ Nano (56 vs. 53). Putting slightly more surface on the Rocket Ship should close much of that gap.

Again, they won't be identical, but a lot closer than you can get with an IQ Tour.
