IQ TOUR or FUSION for starting ball on THS
« on: December 01, 2014, 01:34:26 PM »
I have both these balls and I am looking for advice on which one is the better starting ball. My Fusion hooks more then my IQ Tour so I am thinking ,start with IQ Tour and go up to Fusion or down to Hy Road Pearl depending on what I see. I have been starting with Fusion but if I need more hook the IQ Tour gives me less. I believe I have balls in the wrong order. A little surprised how muck more my Fusion hooks more then my IQ Tour. I was wondering if anybody else has the same reaction between the Fusion and IQ Tour. Just a little surprised my Hybrid is my most hooking ball.

I believe you are confusing "hook" with backend movement. The IQ Fusion is a hybrid cover while the regular Tour is a solid cover. The hybrid cover will create more push than a solid cover and have a stronger backend reaction. A solid cover generally starts to grab a little sooner which leads to a smoother roll and not as much "hook" in some people's eyes.

From what you are saying, you probably aren't bowling on a lot of volume which is why the Fusion and HyRoad Pearl might be better options

Solid is smoother, Fusion is more angular.  Really no way to answer which would be better on a THS.  It is more about how you play the lanes and your style.  The thing about a THS is that it typically allows a lot of different styles to be successful.  If you like to get left and hook the lane, THS lets you do it, and Fusion might work better for you with a stronger recovery down lane.  If you like to play a bit straighter and stay out in the dry, no problem you can do that to.  Solid might work better that way.

Great advice guys! Thanks. I am going to use my IQ Tour to start with and go from there. About a 5 board difference between the IQ Tour and the Fusion. 5 Left with the Fusion and I couldn't miss the pocket. 5 right from the IQ Tour starting spot and I also kept hitting the pocket with my Hy Road Pearl. Now it is just a matter of using the right ball to carry . 2 right with my Shout, from the Hyroad spot and again kept hitting pocket. Shout definitely needed some dry boards to get it to pocket. We do not get a lot of practice before league due to 10 bowlers all practicing in a 10 minute time frame. You have to make the right ball choice pretty quick and hopefully this system will help me do that.

It sounds like you've made a decision, but let me give you a couple of pennies worth of advice. Be careful with the IQ Tour solid on house shots. If your house shot is actually tight and/or challenging, maybe you'll be okay. However, if it's the typical stand left, throw right, wide-open house shot most of us bowl on, I don't know if the Tour Solid is going to be the best ball for that. I find the IQ Tour Solid to be great when the lanes are tricky and I need control, but when they're wide open, the IQ Tour Fusion, IQ Tour Pearl (before mine cracked), and other balls give me better read, better shape, and better carry. Again, this isn't to dog the IQ Tour Solid. I really, really like mine when the pattern is tough; however, when they're wide open, I find that I don't get the right read and shape with it. I've had similar results with other benchmark balls in the past. Sometimes the balls that are best for control and read are the worst for letting it rip. Just something to keep in mind.

I personally prefer the solid as the benchmark. A few throws with that and I know exactly how the lane is playing that night

I agree with Gene - my IQ Tour Solid was the same. It was GREAT when the lanes were tight and/or I needed control, but I had much better options on a typical "stand left, throw right" house shot. Granted, not every bowler is the same, but that's what I saw with my Solid (which, while somewhat condition specific, I loved until it cracked).

Just to summarize, the solid will usually give you more control to the pocket, but often carry will be better with something that stores a little more energy down lane.  The reason the solid isn't the best choice on a house shot is that the pocket is so easy to hit with anything that you look for carry.  On flatter patterns, you have to find the pocket first, and often hitting the pocket trumps great carry.  Again however your style will have a lot to do with it.
