Help on choosing a ball
« on: April 09, 2006, 04:21:49 AM »
Hi, my name is Kevin and Im actually new to the boards. Im not new to bowling as well but I am a semi-noob (so to speak) in choosing a bowling ball. I've been using an 11 lb Brunswick BVP Rampage and looking to step up in a 15 lb range. I made the mistake of buying an 11 lb ball since I thought I couldn't handle anything heavy for long, but now I can. I average pretty well with the Rampage...around 160-170. Im looking for a particle ball that has good continuation and a very aggressive backend. It started out on the Paradigms but then I decided on the Pyros. I was just wondering if that would be a good choice for me to use as my strike ball. I've seen people say it's good for a spare ball which leads me to thinking it doesn't hook that much...at least not the way I want it too.

Thanks in advance!

well since you haven't bowled alot and it will be your first 15lb ball i would definately not reccomend anything like that, there way too aggressive for you to handle, i would look at the Hybrid, Super Sport, and Super Sport Pearl, anything else would be too much ball for you, you need to start with a less agressive ball, develope good tenchique, and then move up to highly agressive balls, and for you get something of the Hot Line from Storm and see how it goes, later on when you can tell us PAP, Rev Rate, Speed (yours know won't help because of ball weight) and axis tilt we can make good suggestions but for now i'd  check out a Hot line ball from storm there all good and great bang for the buck

Im not new to bowling though. Im new to ball selection but I have been bowling for a long time now. I have an average of about 160-170 with the BVP Rampage, Im not sure how to measure the rate of speed I bowl it at or the number of revs I bowl, but I do know i put an above average number of revs on the ball.

The Pyro has an aggressive flip in the backend. Anyone that says it doesn't hook and uses it for spares is either bowling on 60 feet of oil or has no hand at all.

Personally, I think it would be a good ball for someone that wants to step up to a more agressive reaction. You'll still clear the heads easily with the Pyro and it's midlane read is quite tame. It's the last 10 to 15 feet that it makes it's move (at least with the one I have which is drilled with the pin under the ring and cg kicked out about 3 inches).

I see...thanks Wallshot, it's great assurance. I think I can learn to embace the hook. What are good pin placement, top weight..and such to get the most reaction out of the ball?

Keep in  mind that if you go up 4lbs your ball speed will probably go down.  That will give the ball more time to hook then say an 11lb ball thrown harder.  So I would definately go with something polished.  I'm not a Storm fan (never seen on that hooked for me) but the Pyro is polished.  I think if you are used to the reaction of the Rampage, I'd get a 14-15lb Rampage or maybe even a Vapor Zone.  Your profile doesn't give us a clue about your age.  But if you are in the upper teens to adult (without any physical limitations), you should be able to handle the heavier weight. If you are under 15, I'd consult your pro shop to see if you are handling the 11lb alright before going up in weight.  If you are straight bowler that bowls up the middle, it won't matter much what ball you get.

Oh Ive been working on palming a 15 lb house ball to see if I can handle it, and it's a lil hard but I should be fine. Im 20 and go to college at the moment...I definitely consider a 14 lb but nothing less. The hook on my Rampage is very strong...well it might just be me...but from my guess..there shouldn't be a problem with me learning to hook the ball but I definitely have to work on speed.
