Title: Layout for Phase 3
Post by: skfboiler on November 29, 2019, 05:43:19 PM
I’m seriously considering getting this ball. My ball speed is around 14mph according to the ball center speed measuring system. I don’t have any numbers but I consider myself rev dominant. I plan to use the ball during transition or second game during league on the THS.  Should my pro shop dude lay it out for control or angular?

It depend on where you throw the ball. If you play right then control but if you play inside angular. If you give me more infro If you are right hand or not. What part of lane you play etc. I will tell you more.

I'm right handed.  First game, I usually start out standing on board 25 with my target around the 15 board at the arrows.

I don't know your game, but I would be careful to drill it angular if you're actually rev dominant. If others like charlest can comment from the rev dominant side, they can tell you better than I can. Usually rom what I see, rev dominant players would be fighting the ball's motion if you drill an already angular ball to be as angular as possible. Depends on how much blend is created with the lane. I would hope your PSO can steer you in the right direction since they can watch you bowl. Not intended to seem like a jack or anything. Just I would hate for you to not get the best out of the ball.

You might be on to something. My original Soniq is drilled pin down, pin below my middle finger.  Man so I love the motion I get with this layout. It is smooth and controllable. This seem to fit my style pretty well. During transition should I stick this layout or something more angular?  My HyperCell Fused is pin up, pin above the middle finger. I do seem like I’m fighting to get it to hook.

Just out of curiosity.  How does the Timeless roll for you?  I ask because that ball is pretty angular.  The Soniq is a low rg and higher differential ball.  By design; they tend to be smoother.  Then add the pin down layout and you have the reason for what you see in terms of ball reaction.  Honestly; I would lay out the Phase 3 to complement the Soniq.  The core numbers are almost exactly the same.  If it were me; I would put the pin above the bridge and the cg under your ring finger and call it a day.  A lot also depends on your axis point though.  Is the pin under middle finger closer to 4.5 inches from your axis or closer to 5.5 inches?

I know this is the Storm forum, but hear a 900 Global guy out.

In my opinion, you should drill a ball for how fast you want the response to be. If you drill a ball that is fast response with a drill that makes it respond fast, use it on the right condition.

For example, you drill a ball that is fast response (Shiny pearl, high diff) with a fast response drill (4.5*30 or something), you're going to need to play the lanes more front to back. Once you try to go more left to right and pitch it into the dirt, it will be over under city. Probably best used on longer patterns when you need a fast change in direction.

That said, I will take balls and go with a larger val angle (lower pin) for control. It reads the midlane for me because it's slower to transition. When I notice the pin down ball getting a little soft downlane, I will switch to something faster to get it to read correctly.

Yes, my Timeless, drilled the same as my HCF, is pretty angular; pin above the middle finger.  The Timeless seems to have more downlane motion than the HCF. Perhaps I don’t get along with asyms.  I was kinda thinking the same thing, drilling the Phaze 3 to compliment the Soniq, pin above the bridge or ring finger like my Punch Out.  I do like the shape of the Punch Out. The core is just a little week most of the time.

I don’t know any numbers but as far as the pin on the Soniq. It is below and bit left of the middle finger. Therefore I would say it is closer to 5.5 inches from my pap.
