« on: January 13, 2008, 07:14:54 AM »
I have a specail agent pin under ring cg out tword axis, flare increasing X hole currenly box finish but it has gotten shined from use. What should i change surface  to if im going to a tournament that has a ton of oil. Basically my question is, IS there something wthat will hook more then this ball.

Remember, on truly heavy oil, it's not so much about the amount of hook as it is about the amount of roll you can generate to get entry angle to the pocket and continuation through the pins.  (Again, we're talking about truly heavy oil, which you aren't likely to see outside of certain tournaments, and also doesn't just mean long oil, but a high volume of oil!)  The Special Agent has a low RG core and the solid R2S coverstock that just loves oil anyway.  Depending on your release and ball speed, plus the nature of the lanes you're bowling on, it should be a good matchup for heavy oil, especially if you keep it sanded to a lower grit.

If you are facing a medium/heavy condition and you need to generate more angle on the backend to get better carry, something like the Attitude Shift may work better for that.

I agree with Dan's comments, but I'd like to add that there is nothing like throwing a freshly sanded ball to handle heavy tourny oil.  I would take the Special you have and hit it with 1000 Abralon on a ball spinner the day before your tourament.  You'll be surprised at how much oil it will handle day one after being sanded.  However, keep in mind that this will NOT give you additional backend in oil.  If anything, you are going to see a much earlier roll than if you didn't sand it.

I concur with the above statements. When I was bowling in the PBA Experience and facing more oil than I have almost ever (there was on tourney I bowled in that was 50 feet double coated gutter to gutter...what a disaster that was). But every week before the heavy oil patterns (Shark and Scorpion in my experiences), I would sand my Passion to a fresh 500 Abralon, and after my set clean the crap out of it. Next week, hit it with abralon before bowling, clean the heck out of it after my set. Ball maintenance is key for a consistent reaction, and heavy oil gets annoying to deal with if you don't keep up. Hope any of this helps, and good luck in your tourney!

n00dlejester, please pardon my theft of your words.
xxZonexx, no offense intended. This wasn't aimed at you. It was just something that needs to be repeated. Many people are not listening.

n00dlejester said, but I added the visual emphasis because I think it needs to be repeated loudly:

Attitude Shift would be perfect mine are both at 2k still which is box and they will hook through any type of oil and/or carrydown. They could be oil monsters at 1k or below but i do not even see that much oil.

Most of the time you really dont want a ball to Hook more. Def. on the PBA patterns. Most of the balls need to be controlled type drillings and surface. You just need a little bit of angle to actually strike but in heavy oil really nothing is going to "hook" and its not going to roll really either till the pattern wears down. Easy thing to do is play a direct line to the pocket and stay accurate. Lot cheaper then a bowling ball!

The Special Agent is a heavy oil ball for me (I can't picture needing anything else) but my speed is on the med/slower side and I get a pretty good side rotation on the ball.  For that ball, I clean it with the usual cleaner and then when it gets too much oil on it and starts getting shiny I use the Clean N Dull on it...  Also after a pretty good amount of games I will do the abralon pad on the spinner to whatever grit I like (usually 2000).
